Question About 1976-S Kennedy Half - Coin Community Forum

jedichef Pillar of the Community United States 781 Posts	Posted 04/21/2010 02:59 am Am I correct in assuming that the only 2 options for a 1976S Kennedy is either: A) CuNi clad PROOF B) Silver clad (business and PROOF) So if I have a 1976S, it's either a proof that has been put into circulation or it's a silver clad (may or not have been a proof) I ask because I have a 1976s that does NOT look to have been a proof, but it also doesn't appear to be silver clad. GR58 Bedrock of the Community United States 11951 Posts	Posted 04/21/2010 08:30 am jedichef You are correct. - 1976 S copper/nickel clad proofs came in the 1975 and 1976 regular proof sets. (six coin sets) - 1976 S 40% silver clad, in BU and proof, came in 3 coin sets quarter, half and dollar. Also, in my experience, you should be able to look at the edge (reeding) and tell if it has a copper layer or the grey layer that the 40% silver clads have. Report this Post to the Staff
jbuck Moderator United States 187582 Posts	Posted 04/21/2010 11:29 am Use the tissue test! Place a white tissue over the coin and place under a light. A Cu-Ni clad will reflect gray, a silver clad will reflect white. If you are still not sure, it helps to add a known silver and a known Cu-Ni clad to the mix. jedichef Pillar of the Community United States 781 Posts	Posted 04/21/2010 12:16 pm okay, just weighed it. it's a proof. the thing must have been circulating for years, all the reflective fields are completely dulled. there's absolutely no sign that this poor guy was ever a bright and shiny proof piece. I couldn't tell by the reeding because while it did show a copper layer, it looked a lot like a couple of 68's that I have. Report this Post to the Staff
