Something is really wrong with this coin! Currently at over $300.

Definitely. The first one has most likely been harshly cleaned, and the reverse and other factors lead me to believe it is an altered 28-S, or a 1923 with an added mintmark. The wear on the reverse defines a much weaker date.

That is an ugly coin, I'm not even sure if it's the real deal. When I buy one of these, it will either be properly certified, or if raw, I will have personally examined it up close & personal.

Just wanted to add that I am almost positive it is an 1928-S, with an altered date. Any 1923 or 1923-S with that amount of wear on the reverse would have a very weak or obliterated date.

Why would someone bid over $400 on a coin yet completely not understand the difference between a pedestal date and a recessed date

As for the second one, same situation but at least it does not have a stupid bid on it yet. I do not think it is a gash in the date, the edges are very well defined. I think it is a case of a very poorly placed struck through, probably a metal fragment or rim burr.
Either way, I certainly don't need the last stinkin' digit of the date to be able to figure it out and neither should anyone else that takes a minute to think about it

My thoughts exactly. A pre 25 with that level of wear would most likely be unidentifiable, or faint traces of the last digit at most. Also, it looks recessed. I wish I had caught it earlier, I would have reported it and told the seller to modify/remove the listing.

$410! His loss.

Oh yeah, damaged 1928-S. Another ebay scammer. Boy, it never ends does it. I'm starting to think ebay is in on it I've already thought too far.

I clicked on that coin and quickly clicked off while doing my nightly search through the bay the other day. I should have pointed it out here, thanks Johnny for doing that. I'd hate to see any of our members get burnt like that.

There are alot of poor SLQ's on the bay right now, and several that look altered or at least the seller is not being completely up front/honest about. I've seen very few deals in the last 2 weeks, and seen alot of common dates in XF or better sell at 10-20% over book.

Yeah, I wonder why all the SLQ popularity these days? I've been buying up semi-keys lately, but certainly have not found a deal worth getting excited about lately. I would have fought you for that 1919 if I saw it. I've got a 24-d, 24-s, and 19-s on the way....SO CLOSE!

LOL - I have an 18, 19(2), 20, 23, 24 on the way - it was a BIN w/6 SLQ's in it that posted about 3 mins before I saw it. All dates visible - paid $31.99.

I couldn't pass even though I have some of the dates already. I'll sell for profit to add to my 19D and 19S fund. I still haven't picked up any 1917 type 2's.......

I'd bet my weight (240 pounds) in $2 bills that it's an altered 1928-S.

I remember seeing a lot with those dates up in an auction. I wonder if it was the same lot that the seller reposted in a BIN? Anyways, nice going; you should post your album!

Johnny - I'll work on pics for that this weekend. I'd like to fill a couple of those glaring holes first. What is silly is that I actually need a couple of common dates upgraded BADLY. My 25 and 26's are in AG at best.
