UNC-66
Is this CCCS' version of NUBU (numismatic BU,ala ICCS)?

I find this more confusing than the ICCS way.Aren't MS coins also UNC?

I am crying,just not too loudly.I have a PL-65 1973 with a cameo that wasn't noted,if I leave it it's still a PL,if I resubmit it it's going to be NUBU or UNC or whatever.

Interesting. ICCS only uses NBU for post-1975 (or 1976) issues, I wonder what the date cutoff is for CCCS?
Apparently, 1973 or earlier.

CCCS uses "UNC" for uncirculated - this is the same denomination used by the RCM in the envelopes of the sets it produces

NUBU was coined and used by ICCS in a very inconsistent way - you will find everything with a NUBU note (from proofs to MS). ICCS never explained what it means

I think this is a very valid question. I would take an MS-66 over an SP-66 any day so clarification on what it means to those who do not know would be appreciated.

... I would take a specimen George V over an MS at any moment :-)

There is no way of telling the NUBU story in just a few lines ... and some friends advised me not to tell it without adult suppervision

If my experience as a collector worth anything, my advice is to stay away of any coin with the NUBU note on the certificate or resubmit the coin to CCCS to get a valid, consistent and useful certificate

You got me t_y. I was thinking modern coins. I rarely see SP coins that are not Elizabeth so I din't even think about them but ya, I'd take a George SP over MS for sure! Elizabeth, the other way around in most cases...

@t_y . I like the part of your post where you give your own opinion as a collector and advice on items tagged NUBU, but hinting that you know more about this and won't share it is worse than useless in my opinion.

Come to TOREX in June and between one pint and another I will tell you everything. In fact, everybody at the Hilton bar will be pleased to share their views on the issue (they are quite similar).

I'm not going to get into this any more than necessary, because it gets ugly really fast, but in *theory*, the NBU grade is used to designate PL coins post-1976. There should never be a proof or mint state coin in an NBU holder, though maybe it has happened. TY, have you actually seen a proof in an NBU holder?

As much as I don't agree with HHB's sentiment that there is nothing worth collecting after 1967, it would sure be a lot less headache sometimes!

Yes, I saw. It is a 10c proof grade MS NUBU - the owner did not want to sell it to me

and I agree, this issue gets ugly very fast. enough said

A lot of numismatic testosterone on the floor today. Good debate.

So how can I tell the difference between circulating MS-65 @ $5,000 and non-circulating MS-65 @ $400 ?

Can one possibly alter the appearance of the cheaper coin to look like the other one?

Since I only collect twoonies, I only know coins from 1996 on. For 1996 coins on, it is easy to see the difference between a business strike and a proof-like: proof like coins are brilliant = they have reflective fields - easy to see even through slabs. The rim is well defined and rarely (if ever) there is even a hint of cameo (dies are not prepared for such effect). Business strikes are somewhat brilliant but don't have the reflective fields of the PL, the rim is irregular. In the business strike you have clear definition of the image of the queen tending to a quasi-cameo (dies are treated for such effect)

Rule of the thumb: look at the PL before buying a $5,000 MS and don't buy the wrapper, buy the coin.

The 10c proof, if I remember well, is 2006. I saw it on the hands of a collector at NUPHILEX November last year. The owner brought he coin to me because he thought it was undergraded - he did not noticed the proof designation.
