Hey,

I got a silver Monroe dollar in change today. Not normal. I read up that it could be a wrong planchet error; do you guys know anything about this? Is it of extra value?

Here are some articles on Monroe "wrong planchet errors." It seems that if you have one of these wrong planchet errors, it may be valuable.

Here are two statements from the articles you posted Jim:

According to a statement subsequently released by the US Mint, all of the errors had been recovered and returned to the Mint. Despite the statement, there was still some discussion about whether it was possible for one or more of the errors to escape notice and reach circulation.

It has now been just over one month and no one has come forward with news of the discovery of a Monroe Dollar wrong planchet error. However, there has been another type of significant error has been discovered, first reported by Susan Headley on About.com:Coins.

The United States Mint issued a statement just before noon on Feb. 4 indicating that it has no evidence that 2008-P Monroe dollar coins struck on quarter dollar planchets will reach circulation.

I will try and post pictures tonight - if it is indeed this error, would it be worth around $50? It seems to be pretty rare

Of course it could just be plated outside of the mint. Can you see the copper layer? If it is plated you probably won't be able to see it. People will do strange things to coins just for the fun of it. But I hope I'm wrong and you have what you hope it is!

IF it was a Monroe struck on a quarter planchet to wold be worth well more than $50. Pictures, unless they are very good one may not tell us much. Much more important than pictures is WHAT DOES IT WEIGH?, and can you see the "silver" copper "silver" sandwich effect on the edge of the coin? If it isn't SIGNIFICANTLY lighter than a regular dollar coin, and/or you can't see that "sandwich" then it is most likely a plated coin.

Both a picture and an accurate weight of the coin would be helpful.

unfortunately, it is silver plated. I did a few tests, and thats what it came out to be. It still pretty cool - a silver presentdential dollar - just not as cool as I hoped. Thanks for the insight guys!

Curious as to what tests you did on the coin.
Also to what the weight of it is.
