I have a full set of US nickels from 1913-1964 that is currently housed in a Dansco Album. Some of the coins have been pushed through the cutout and lie against the back window. I am afraid that I will end up scratching some coins if I leave them in the dansco due to upgrades/grading/ect...and am looking for good long term storage.

I was thinking of using direct fit air-tites. If I put these in 20-pocket album pages they may fall out the top, and I am trying not to use staples. (would the coin in an air-tite fit into a self-adhesive 2x2? Or maybe a Safflip (like the ones used to submit coins for grading)?

Does anyone have any ideas on how to do this.

I see no reason why BadThad's album solution would not work for your nickels.

He does use at least one staple though.

I suppose putting them in the self-sealing 2x2 would be okay. The AirTite will prevent the adhesive from ever being a problem for the coin.

Here's my Buffs in airtites. I just used a card behind them.

After recently switching all my proofs to Badthad's method. I don't think the adhesive ones would work with the airtite. It is such a squeeze with the one staple, I don't think an adhesive one would close.

Thads and Wheezys methods look pretty good. I am just trying to stay away from the staples to avoid them catching on the pocket page when removing/replacing coin in pages.

I might go with something similar to wheezys method. I really like the way the buffalos look in the direct-fits....

The only issue with this method is after you figure the cost of the flips, air-tites, pocket pages, and binder this method will be quite a bit more expensive than the dansco they are in.

I do think they will be better protected which is worth it.

I have empty Danscos. Unless they are kept in a dry environment, I feel they absorb moisture and cause verdigris problems for the coin edges, especially with copper coins and nickels. Yes it was expensive but there should be no heartbreak down the road when it comes time to sell or enjoy.

Another question. Is there any real difference in Safe-T Flips and Saflips? Both are made without PVC. The Saflips seem to run 3x the price of the Safe-T flips...

Well, the flips I have are very stiff, and I must say that there were a few that cracked however they are a bit overloaded with the airtites in them too.
I think the school of thought is that the more pliable the holder the more chemicals are in it to make it that way and stay that way.
I have heard stiffer ones are safer but if you are using airtites, it probably doesn't matter except that the flips might get that cloudy greasy look after some time.
The ones I bought are called SAFE T non plasticised coin flips.
