To those on this forum who tramp around on others I must say Collector's Universe is getting to be a frightning place to visit. Beside the usual "CLICK" bullying that goes on there that have now posted a thread asking "WHAT DO YOU HATE MOST ABOUT THIS FORUM" Not dislike, want to improve, but hate! Take a peek and tell me were not fortunate to have the kind of members we have. I have to admit that there are still some good folks on that forum and much interesting news. I now read, but rarely post unless is is to defend some poor "newbie" that has gotten the now familiar thrashing that the bullies dish out. Mike

In late 2003 when I began making the time to contribute to an online forum, I lurked at all that I could find. I wanted a forum that would cater to the newbie as well as the advanced collector. A place where all were welcome, including young people trying to learn about coins. I spend about 5 minutes reviewing RCC, 10 minutes looking at CU, and about 10 minutes looking at NGC. None met the standards that I was looking for. CoinWorld was pretty decent along with a few others. I eventually decided on Cointalk and Coinpeople. Time restraints lead me to pick just one forum and that was CT. After a year, the site owner and I had an unfortunate situation and I left that board. Susan was gracious enough to create this little forum for me to call home. While we may not have the traffic (yet), this is a very friendly place that I would easily recommend to anyone.

I went and took a look as well. It seems one of the forum administators did not want a link to this forum posted ontheC/T forum because this Forum is just a place for Susan to advertise her business!!!! I sent NOS the link to this site in a private mail. Mike

It is not uncommon. I don't know if it is the case in that CoinTalk thread or not but there is a lot of competition/animosity between various forums and the regulars of a forum. It is why you will not often see other forums mentioned on each other's sites and also why you see a lot of "Across the street" references, etc. I have never bought into it myself. It has always seemed kind of silly. Each forum out there is different and develops a different 'flavor' but rarely would I categorize one as 'bad'.

I used to post to a lot of different forums but I noticed that after I started my own (and it grew), I was less well received on most of them. It couldn't be because of my sparkling personality just went sour. Now, between that and time constraints, I don't post much to many forums any more but I read most of them to a great or lesser extent. This one is one I pop in on quite a bit. You are doing a good job here. Also good to see ND has found a home again. Always good to read his posts and I missed them when he left CoinTalk. Anyway, just my 2 center on the topic.

Stujoe, you know you are always welcome here and I'm glad to hear that you stop by here.

Since Stujoe would never do this, I'd like to let everyone know that he runs a great forum called Coin People. Definitely worth checking out. I feel the same way that you do, Stujoe. There is no reason for competition, we're all here to serve the numismatic community. Some just do it a lot differently

Thanks Susan! I have been lurking for a couple of weeks and certainly like the atmosphere here! As I 'get around' online a bit, I recognize many posters here and am not surprised at the quality of the discussions.

For the record, I would also like to point out that I started this forum for the purpose of education and discussion (in that order). Yes, we have links to our items for sale, but the domain and hosting cost us money. It's no different than if we had outside advertisers.

The purpose of this forum has never been and will never be to generate business. I firmly believe that education is the key to collector success and this forum is one tangible way of providing that.

Welcome Stujoe! I hope you stop in more often. I don't know who NOS is but he or she started the inquiry about Susan. I mailed NOS privately with a link to this forum! Mike

I visit a dozen forums and stopped posting on most because I was just ignored
I was eliminated twice with four posts on gold eagle forum for saying something uneconomical like where you can get a free antiflash program
( that will stop those annoying ads flashing in your face )
The second time for asking where somebody was ( he had just been deleted )

I think it was on Coin Talk that a 6 lettre abbreviation poster
said a coin I showed was harsly cleaned ( now my best friend is a retired american coindealer and he commented I will believe it when the guy explains how and why but I let it drop )

Problem is that professionals sometimes will be condescending whilst being wrong
This place seems to be more open to honest opinions then many others

I am all for new members...BUT...(is there always a BUT?)...when you see some people (especially newbies) that, for instance, continue to believe that their gold plated coin is actually solid gold, even after countless posts from experienced collectors...it just dilutes the forum with MTV mind-set dribble.

Hopefully, that will not happen here. I believe the quality of the post versus the number of posts is more important. Sure we can have fun, but you can only beat a dead horse so much!

Good to see you Stujoe...welcome!

Hi Stujoe! Nice to see you popping in.

ageka, try not to take the comments too personally. Many people who have been in the hobby for a while are quick to pass judments on a coin because they have seen the same type of thing over an over. Trying to determine grades and cleaning from an internet picture is very difficult. If your color settings are off a bit it can make the coin pictured look like a harshly cleaned coin. If the glass has been cleaned on your scanner the streaks will show up in the picture making the coin appear to have lines on it.
Most of the time, it is just an opinion, and they are trying to be as honest as possible. Now I know that many are quick to make a comment and not explain why they have made that decision. I have been guilty of that myself many times. There are some quality people on CoinTalk and still some good information being put out. Most forum users jump around from site to site. That is a good idea. Many offer different formats and different topics. No one can learn everything from just one source. Some of us are just burdened by a serious lack of time.

For those of you that have not visited http://www.coinpeople.com please do. There are some interesting people who make that site their home. As an added bonus you can use all kinds of silly emotions there. (Kind of neat) Stujoe keeps udating the site so it takes a while to see everything, but I highly recommend it to anyone that likes to surf other forums that are friendly and knowledgeable.

You just proved my point.
You are open and honest and admit you can be wrong once in a blue moon

I find photos ten times more difficult to judge then scans because a lot can be lighted out or glared out

Stujoe also has a section with some pretty cool coin games and puzzles. I've spent quite a bit of time there unwinding. I've got to ask him where he got those. Maybe we could add some here.

Once in a blue moon? Ask my employees or girlfriend and I am only right once in a blue moon

I have been in the business long enough to realize that we all need to learn and be open to possibilities. New coins are found, new varieties, and new errors. Those who think that all is set in stone only do a disservice to themselves.
