The design is Japan 10 yen y#73a year 42 (1967) but it's nickel (I think - non-magnetic) instead of the usual bronze, same size but weight approx 4.6 grammes. No mention of it in Krause so a rogue planchet? Does anyone know any better? (And yes it's a shame about the hole).

Chances are it's plated with something. Never heard of Japan mint messing up their planchets. Japanese error coins are nearly impossible to locate.

Yeah, and (pure) nickel coins are magnetic.

Also, if it might tickle your fancy, Showa 42 (1967) was also the first year that the 100 yen coin was minted. But, the 100 yen planchet is 22.6mm, while the 10 yen one is 23.5mm. The borders on yours seem to be the regular thickness.

Thanks gx and wd, mystery now solved. Can now confirm that it is plated. A trace of bronze is just visible at the edge of the hole under greater magnification.
