Hey everyone, I recently have had an opportunity to buy several bulk lots of Large Cents (Vickies) and I'm curious how people here usually do it. Do you guys generally go on a $ figure per coin, as I have been informed they grade roughly between VG-XF.
I don't want to get hosed, but I also really want it to be fair to the other party in the deal. Let me know your opinions and hopefully I can get my hands on some more to go through

Personally, I don't buy in bulk. However, that is because I am usually looking for specific items. If I was to buy in bulk, I would probably assume the worst about the coins. In your case, I would probably figure out what the cheapest VG Vickies sell for, and I might offer 25% more than that for the coins just because some of them should be better.
The fact is, whenever someone tells me "I'm selling 100 unsearched coins in grades VG - EF", I know that they are at least somewhat lying. The fact that they know the coins grade VG - EF means that someone along the way has, at least briefly, looked at the coins and said where the grades fall. Most people who would assign grades, would likely recognize key years right away and pull them.
Just my thoughts.

Yeah, there is no doubt at all they have been searched. Although they have not been searched for minute uncommon varieties. He searched for major ones like 1891, 1859, stuff like that. But he had not spent the time searching each and every date. I will be doing research on the coins so larger varieties are not of a huge interest anyway. I actually put out the request to him and several others that I was looking for bulk quantities of vickies, and I am happy he wrote back. So he isn't trying to "dump" his "junk", I asked for whatever they had. :) I am now trying to find a happy medium for the both of us.

"VG-EF" usually ends up being 80% G, 19% VG and 1% VF. you can find nice vickies in the 1-2 dollar bins at most dealers. caveat emptor big time. hope I'm wrong, keep us posted!

2$ per coin? Isn't that a little low? The seller also has a bunch of problem coins in flips for offer as well. Those I can understand offering 2$ per coin. Any more opinions would be greatly appreciated!

There's two ways I've bought bulk... filling low grade sets for people or buying coins for art. In either case, I've always assumed the average grade is going to be VG8 and priced accordingly. I agree with the 2-3 dollars in bulk lots. 3 for Vicky, 2 for Edward is my standing offer at the local auction sight unseen. Once a year I might get a nice piece, the rest are just average at best.
If the seller wants more, you need more data, photos or scans of the coins in question. If you are trusted or have have references or are willing to pay two way shipping you can assess in hand first at times.

SNAZ, I have to go with the majority. I, too am looking foe "VICKYS" in bulk. I am not really particular about the grade, because one will gert a cross-grade in these lots. "IOE "Good, bad, and ugly". I want them for reaearch, into the varieties, and to get to know them better. I have about 40, and that does not give much room for varieties! I didn't have an idea as to an "offer, but from the general opinion, I will make the same offer. I don't want problem coins, in these coins. I have been buying "problem coins" for a few IHC sets, to see what I might find, in RPD', but the idea is to complete a couple sets, if possible. The grades are not important, in this case. The complete set of dates is the goal. I have most of the set of dates, for my VICKYS, and later, will begin to look for better grades. I found that butying lots of LMC/LWC, was not the best way to go, but when one is new to varieties, mistakes are bound to be made. Ce 'est la Vie! Or something like that...... Let us know what you find out. Also, if we should happen to "work the same seller", what you offer, and I'll match it with mine. no need to 'shoot eachother down! what ever the outcome, the Vickys I obtain any time will not be sold. It is a "one-waytrip" to my house. Thanks, Dick

I have looked at many ads for unsearched coins but I am to skeptical, I remember one ad on e-bay recently that said somewhere in a long dissertation on how busy they are and how there were just two many coins [pennies] -they- had not searched them .Did not mention that someone else had not searched them. But hey as long as they are in range could be fun hunt.

It is getting so bad that I am sceptical of any statements by the 'sellers", because one has no way to know who they are dealing with, and unless one is VERY cognizant of the varieties, and errors, which the counterfeitng groups are producing, one has no way to tell if they are legit, or not. I was looking at a link from another forum, and every one of the coins were counterfeit! There were IHC, LMC, and they all were obviously counterfeit. The one that was the aauction item was an 1868 IHC. It had the bold "N". That obviously was a counterfeit. When we looked at the "other items", there were others that came to light. In a wird, the whole thing was counterfeit, and there was some serious money, moving. I don't buty on ebay. I have my trusted sellers that some sell on ebay, and others thst have come via links, and emails, to get acquainted. They are the ones who are sending me the coins I have. No auctions, no ebay. Dick
