I recently placed an order from a Canadian coin dealer's website. This is the e-mail that I received today, with my response. Is this a common occurrence? I do realize that my order was for silver coins, but I was not purchasing from their bullion section. Any comments?
You recently placed an order for several items from our website that have not been updated in a while so there are price increases so many of them.
1963 PL Set ......... was $22.00 ea ... is $23.50 ea 1964 PL Set ......... was $22.00 ea ... is $23.50 ea 1965 T1 PL Set ...... was $22.00 ea ... is $23.50 ea 1965 T2 PL Set ...... was $22.00 ea ... is $23.50 ea Special Offering of 5 50¢ George V, VG ... was $27.50 ... is $30.00 Special Offering of 20 $1 Elizabeth II 1959-1966, AU ......... was $230.00 ... is $255.00
This would make your order total $608.00 instead of $544.95.
Shall we proceed at the new prices or would you rather cancel the order? Please advise.
Not a great way to start with a new customer. I would have thought that providing my visa info with my order would secure the pricing that you advertised on that day, and therefore constitute an order. A week later, you inform me of a price increase of almost 12 percent. These coins were not listed in your bullion section that requires phone call price confirmation. I would have a hard time ordering from you in the future, if the advertised prices on your website were not firm and could be raised after order placement.
My interest in your company was based on referrals and recommendations from a number of collectors who I do business with. I realize this is not a large opening order, but I am disappointed.
Please cancel this order.

Yeah I know who's site that is and you responded correctly.
The PL sets are overpriced for the most part especially once you add GST. Private Ebayers often have multiple PL sets for sale at live auction for under retail and no taxes charged. They really are just bullion items from 63 on. Colonial also had four on for 85ish bucks at one point a couple weeks ago.

I just got a return e-mail from my response. "Confirmed, thank you". Business is good in the Coin World I guess. I know in my industry, that this would not wash, and word of mouth is very important, I consider my customers to be my best salesmen. Anyway, I know there is fine print regarding the right to change prices, but the day I placed my order, I was e-mailed an order confirmation number. I was assuming that this number "confirmed" my order, how silly of me.

Does this have anything to do with the recent roll-out of the HST..aka Harmonized Sales Tax? I guess when push comes to shove, it doesn't matter one way or another..I like your response. They should have eaten the variance in price until they got their website pricing proper. IMO I think a $600 order is large enough for them to do the right thing.

No I don't think so Dollar.
HST will introduce a larger grey market area here in Ontario (largest buying market) and I'll do more private and less retail buying/selling. Cash talks and bullpuckey walks right. Either that or the dealers can eat the 15% in price difference because I know I won't.
One of the pre HST benefits of ordering from BC/AB etc is not paying ON's 8%. When this changes so will I.

Well handled. Another fine example as to why coin dealers are not highly thought of.

Sorry but I have to quote that entire sentence It starts "i am a coin expert" and continues "so it is tough to say on condition or rarity variations. all need to be polished, once cleaned you could have some gems."

Ugly...don't accept the HST as something that will happen just yet. There has been a LOT of complaint against it, and I know I'll do everything I can personally to stop it. The government is supposed to work for YOU, not the other way around.
The "savings passed along to consumers" is BS. Given the choice between passing on savings, or pocketing the difference, I don't even have to say what they will do. The whole thing is one big mess, and it amounts to the Federal government bribing (literally) the provinces to bring it in.
25 cent piece, I think you handled that well. I'm curious to know who the seller is?

Just as an aside, Stick around, get 50 quality posts and you can tap into a big market of general coins here on the forum. For example, the least amount of proof like sets (uncirculated)in those years mentioned I have are the 63's and I have 22 of those. I'm not even a dealer. I just accumulate them as part of other deals and they happen to be a great bullion buy most of the time at 80% silver or 1.11 ounces per set.
Some of the bigger collectors on here could fill that order with better coins from their spares. The silver dollars in those years are a great example. There is no reason to settle for less than an MS-63 for around 20 each. If you just want variety to study, most of us have beaters in the melt pile waiting for silver to rise.

Thanks for the heads up ugly. My interest in that order was for silver mostly. I have two sons, my youngest has interest in our coin collection, we coin roll hunt together and also save for key pieces. He will inherit the collection as a family heirloom. My older son does not have the same interest in coin collecting, so I am investing in silver, among other things for his future. I will hold it for him until he is of an age to deal with it properly.
