Hello, I'm trying to figure out what the mint mark is on my 1891 double eagle. Can you help? Thanks!

Welcome to Coin Community. Given that the Denver Mint didn't open until 1906, I would say it's a safe bet to assume your Double Eagle was minted in San Francisco. This is one of the more common Liberty Double Eagles, but many were shipped for overseas trade. As a result, it's likely that your coin has an interesting history. Wish we could know where it's been during its' life.

Looks like a scrunched "S". We can certainly rule out a "D" for Denver. That would be my opinion. Nice coin!

Thanks folks. I was thinking S but wasn't sure and figured I'd ask the experts (ie not me). This particular coin has been my mom's possession for about as long as I've been around (34 years).

Follow up questions now that I'm sure this is 1891-S Coronet. What would this coin fetch from lets say an ebay sale? The coin is probably XF grade and I'm just going off of what the paperwork says that came with the coin. Would you all recommend ebay or perhaps another method of selling this coin? Any advice or education would be greatly appreciated.

Given the wear and relative commonality, I don't believe this coin would bring much in additional value over bullion price. However, for that I'd rather defer to those who know more than I about gold.

I agree with super Dave! However, you never know who is out there and what they will pay. In my experience I have seen coins go for 50% more than they book for or I thought they should go and I have seen coins go for half of their supposed value. The old adage applies, "beauty is I am of the holder" in this case and in my opinion with all cases of art (coins included).

I agree with the XF grade and would value this coin around $1200 today. The pictures give it a cleaned/polished appearance and that would hurt the value a little but, as stated, it's still worth 0.9675 ozs of gold!

Considering that in 1891 they made double eagles in Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Carson City, and the coin does have a single mintmark.....
