I just bought 5 2002 ASE's just for the bullion content. Anyway when they arrived a couple of them are stained around the edges and partially across the face of the obverse with a coffee colored 'gunk'. One of them has a partial finger print in the 'gunk area' too.

Now given that these coins dont really have any numismatic value and I cant stand looking at them with this gunk on them.....dare I say it....OK I will. How do I get it off?

Hi mnemtsas

You can try acetone,, soak the coins in seperate containers or one at a time,, it could take several hours or several days to cut the gunk .There is no guarantee that any of it will come off,, but I think this is your best shot aside from dipping the coins .

Hi mnemtsas

There are a few products on the market for dipping coins, they are an acid and to me a very last resort,, one such product is called MS-70 there are others.

I do not recommend dipping,, acid removes metal from the coin and if done wrong the coin will be ruined.

Acetone is my recommendation for your ASE's,, it will not harm nobel metals and does not remove any metal from the coin.

CVS is kind of a pharmacy/general store type of thing. They're a regional store that is all over the place in the areas they serve. Very busy, expanding chain in over half the states.
