So here was my recent purchase, and I received it in the mail today. Lot of 40 slqs at $196... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...85895188&ru=http://shop.ebay.com:80/%3F_from=R40&_trksid=p4712.m570.l1313&_nkw=130385895188&_sacat=See-All-Categories&_fvi=1&_rdc=1 So, the obvious HIGH GRADE coin in the lot stands out as the 1917 type 2 in the top row. Great details on this coin, but unfortunately it was harshly cleaned... I thought it might be, and it's not the reason I bid on this lot. The coin in the bottom row, third column was my reason for bidding. I knew it was a 1921, but couldnt get much of a read on the grade. I was quite surprised at how much detail it has. The date is difficult to read because of the toning pattern, but it has 4 full BOLD digits. This coin also actually has some remaining luster in the protected areas! I do believe it too was dipped or lightly cleaned at some point, but not nearly as bad as the 1917. I tried to take several shots with different lighting, but only one shows the date clearly... I am quite pleased overall...I found a couple of other minor upgrades too, but these were the major ones.

Anyone care to offer a grade on the new acquisitions? I will probably end up reselling the 17 on the bay, since I like my lower grade original one better. The new 1921 I'm definitely keeping as an upgrade, since this was my previous filler....

Amazing finds once again! I'd say the '21 is a VF-30 and the '17 a nice AU-50 cleaned.

You're killing me.
Congrats again. Man - you are killing it. I looked at EVERY one of those lots and somehow missed that 21. I remember the 17. I've gotta get my eyes checked. My lot wasn't as productive. The hoped for 21 wasn't, and the 17 t-1 and 18S weren't as nice as the ones I already had. I have 40+ SLQs to sell off next week, as well as a roll of Walkers. So - I'll be back in the SLQ lot game soon.
I did score with my lot of Walkers - pics coming later of the 16D, 17S, 18 and 18D. Another lot with a 38D is on the way. I filled 9 holes in my Walker collection through that seller for $7.10 each coin from lot 1.

Johnny, You've got an amazing eye for cherrypicking! You'd be fun to go to a coin show with!

I forgot to add - the 21 in VF condition like you have there is worth more than double what you paid for the whole lot anyway.
Fantastic job. I'm happy for you, but at the same time, mad at myself. LOL.

I brought up the ebay listing you provided the link to and ONLY BECAUSE I was looking for it and knew it should be there did I see this 1921. I am assuming that when you came across this listing you looked at all the quarters real hard and squinted your eyes and maybe increased the size or resolution of your screen and said something like, "Hmmmm....I think that might be a 1921" ...and then bid on this lot. But if the seller would have been playing the old "bait and switch" game and swapped the '21 out for some other date before shipping do you think you could have proved it? Would you have tried? Just idle curiosity. I got burned on something similar years ago. I'm glad it worked our well for you!

Even at %400 that is hard to see. I have had some luck in buying "lots". Smetimes the seller just wants to get rid of a bunch of one type.

Thanks for your comments. I can't wait to see your 38-d and 16-d walkers afcop, that's an incredible find for melt! Since there are literally dozens of these lots, I usually do a quick scan for type 1s, and any type 2s with enough remaining details to warrant closer examination. Probably 95% of the coins in these lots are dateless type2 pre-25s, or AG-VG post 25s; so I usually dont give them a second look(unless its a 27-s). The 21 caught my eye because I knew it was in the fine range. I did see what looked to be a "1", and then blew it up and played with the contrast. At that point I was nearly certain it was a 1921, or at least the toning pattern mimicked the last 1. What I didn't know from the picture is that it actually had a full date(I think wheatguy nailed it with VF-30).....that was complete utter luck. The wear pattern on this date is usually such that the last "1" is the only one showing in lower grades as it is most protected from wear, and that was all I could make out in the pic. I did blow up the sellers pic and played with the contrast before purchasing..The last "1" digit is clear imo. I have had other sellers "bait and switch" before, but have had no problems with this seller and this is probably the 6th or 7th lot I've bought from him.

Great job. I've been trying to learn to play with the resizing of his lots and need to really work on that aspect of it. This particular seller does seem to have hoards and hoards of coins that he sells in random lots.
Johnny - the 16D is in G4 condition. It arrived today, along with some 17 and 18's. The 38D will be here Mon/Tues, but I'm out of town until then.
I still would've been nervous on that pic, I've got more learning to do for sure. I do have my 21 in similar condition to the one you replaced, so I'm happy (for now).
When all things are considered, even if that hadn't been a 21, you paid less than $5 a coin for 40 SLQ's, and upgraded a couple of slots, plus will sell off the 1917 at a large profit.
I'm now up to 11 Type 1's that I need to get off my butt with and photograph and sell so I can buy another lot or two. LOL.

Quote: 1st lot above - 5 over, 4 down? Yes sir! Quote: 2nd lot - I dunno. 4 over, down 6. This one was the best of the bunch imo, full date, solid VF and probably better than the one I posted. I was sleeping when I got out bid....if you snooze, you lose..LOL.

I've been thinking about moving up to the SLQ lots that this guys is offering. I've just been sticking to the Walking Liberty halves. I'm hoping to fill up a dansco out of these lots. I've seen a lot of the keys pop up but they're always listed in his auctions and totally obvious from his pictures. I haven't been diligent enough to go for them seriously.

Well, this may go down as one of my greatest buys ever, maybe even as good as the dateless slq lot. The cleaned AU/BU 1917 sold on ebay for $120 , way more than I expected...and the rest of the coins from the lot sold together in a lot for $150 . I guess that is partially because silver is going up. Since I paid $200 for the lot and got 270 back, after ebay fees etc, I'm still up $50...and I get the VF/XF 1921 for FREE. Oh...happy day! I need threads like this to ease the pain of my $3 gold counterfeit purchase of several years ago that left me out hundreds. The old G/VG 1921 sold for $97, and I think the buyer got a good deal on that one....which is fine.
