Halfwitty Pillar of the Community United States 1523 Posts	Posted 05/10/2010 7:19 pm I have 2 blank planchets that are copper color: #1 has a weight of 2.48g a thickness of 1.42mm and a diameter of 18.41mm. #2 has a weight of 3.06g a thickness of 1.34 mm and a diameter of 18.63mm. The rims are not formed on these although there is a bit of a flair.My question would be.How would a person figure out which cent they were to be?They were both found while roll searching U.S. pennies. The easiest definitive method would be a specific gravity test and you should not rely on appearance alone. Of course, there is also the destructive method of cutting the rim but that is never a good idea As for the other one, it would be virtually impossible to determine whether it was an IHC planchet as they had the same basic composition as LWCs with minor variations. Sure, you do an XRF analysis and determine the specific elemental composition and figure out the time period of the alloy but that would cost much more than an IHC planchet would be worth.
