Stupid Investment Of The Week

This should be a popular sentiment!

I originally stayed away from this topic but after reading the latest posts I find that I cannot. I WILL stick to the short version though.

I have noticed a prevalent trend on these forums. An elitest attitude about "coin collecting." What I have read in this thread is just about the top of the heap.

Contigent concepts of this thread are;

The Danbury Mint is selling a product (coins) for much more than its value.
The Danbury Mint is "gouging" people and "ripping them off".

According to who? You? Since when do You make the rules?

Here's an additional concept to toss in here:
Every person who collects coins is not a "coin collector".

At least, not a "coin collector" based upon the standards that seem to apply here.

And this extends beyond this particular thread into others which include any televised selling of coins, and coins sold online through ebay and such.

Yes, Danbury Mint is selling something for more than a "percieved" value, and granted, above "face value". It may not be your "cup of tea" but I really fail to see how this rises to the level of my favorite quote from this thread;




For what? Selling a product? Making a profit? Making available a product that many people would not otherwise have "practical access" to?

We could extend this concept to many other things (like cars, for one) but we'll stick to the topic at hand.

Sure, anybody can walk in a coin store and buy some stuff. Only certain people do that. Go ahead, put together, YOURSELF, what TDM is offering and let's see how "easy" it was for you to accomplish, and at what cost. Yeah, Suzy Homemaker is really into doing THAT for her hubby! Or for her dad, or for her son, ad infinitum.

So let me see if I got this straight; The Danbury Mint is a crook and Suzy Homemaker is stupid. That about cover it?

It is certainly heartening to know from reading posts here over many months that no "coin collector" here has ever paid more than the "accepted value" of any coin or coins.

And probably never got "gouged" on a car of a house or a ________ either.

Or any other "such worthless things".

I think the channel I fell asleep with was something like NATGEO or HIST; because I do not watch HSN.

I dont know all about whether these infomercials should be sued, stopped, whatever.

During my first week in college Economics 101 is where I recall I first heard the business axiom, "Create the need or desire (perceived or real) and they will buy it."

I reckon I was probably 10, 11, or 12 when I got my first "caveat emptor" lesson.

I'm going to hold out for the colorized version in a laminated box.
