Looking at an NGC Morgan coin but the NGC number has at the end -003. I tend to think these numbers at the end with a dash-hyphen mean something about the coin. I searched NGC's site but could not find out anything. Would someone please explain the numbers to me especially ones that are at the end with a dash.

Thanks again.

The prefix before the dash relates to the invoice number on the submittal form. The 003 following the dash relates to the third coin on the same list that was submitted for grading. nlp

Thank you for the quick reply. I thought may -003 or other numbers stood for cleaned, etc.

Thanks

delaner: That was a PCGS coin. Does NGC use the same codes?

I believe the codes listed are for PCGS - I don't think NGC uses the same ones (if they use any at all).

edit: what RPT said! Anyone have an NGC "genuine" slab to check for codes?

as was said above, the first set of numbers (before the dash) is just the number on the form that you send in. If the number at the top of the form is 1234567 the first coin on the sheet to be graded will be 1234567-001 and the second coin listed on the page would be 1234567-002 and so on and so on until every coin on the form was graded. So if you see a coin with the last numbers -032 it means that was the 32nd coin graded on the same form (there were 31 other coins on the same form graded before this one)

I have 3 coins that were recently sent to NGC and came back as improperly cleaned. All my last 3 numbers on the slabs are different. The5th-6th-and 7th numbers are all the same: 776. Is this the code for "IMP. Cleaned?

No, as stated the seven digit number to the left of the Hyphen is the invoice number, and the three digit number to the right is the number of the coin on that invoice, the first coin 001, the second 002, third 003 .... on up through nine hundred ninety ninth coin 999. If you have a thousand or more coins on one invoice (say you sent three green monster boxes) when it reaches a thousand the NGC computer generates a new unused invoice number and starts over at 001.

As far as I know NGC does not use code numbers for the different problems. Back in the days of bodybags they had a sticker they placed in the flip and they checked off the properline to identify the problem. On the NCS and now the problem slabbed coins they give a detail grade (I don't know if they use a numerical grade) and list on the slab what the problem is.
