Hey everyone, I'm new here and new to coin collecting. I'm looking to buy a 1936 Walking Liberty half dollar. It has been proofed and is pr69. NGSC graded it. If someone can help me out by giving me an idea of what this is worth paying for that would be great.

First of all, welcome to the CCF! NGSC sounds like a "basement third party grading service". PF69 would be an incredibly high grade for this coin and would go for several thousand dollars if the grade is actually what the coin is. If this coin is in fact a proof, I suspect the grade will be much lower. What are they asking for the coin? The three big reputable TPG services are PCGS,NGC,ANACS. ICG is also reputable. I would only trust these grading co's with reasonable accuracy on the grades of coins. There is much experience here on the CCF, and someone is always willing to help you out!

1. its a bad slabber and they probably WAY over grade problem coins, which brings me to 2. the coin in question may look great, but its probably a problem coin (IE. whizzed, polished, or doctored.) and that LOWERS, if any, the value
and 3. it might actually be a fake coin for reason 1.
and 4. the price SHOULD be several thousand dollars, but its only 300. that shows definite signs of a bad coin.

Good deals can be found in these basement slabs, if one knows the series well and knows there is no problems. You stated that you're a new collector, and the fact you were considering purchasing the coin being a new collector scares me. Read as much as you can here and research then buy coins. Lack of knowledge is the main reason people get scammed and ripped off. By the way, .

That coin looks Mint State (MS) and NOT Proof. I could be wrong but I would definitely avoid. Worth no where near $300. To help you identify and learn about the different US coins, purchase a Red Book of United States coins. It's a great reference guide. Please visit the grading threads here as well as all the threads to get a feel of the discussions here. Ask as many questions as you need

I definitely would not trust that seller or the slab. The 1853 quarter is listed as VF20, and it is probably G04 at best.

Also being sold AS IS, with No Return. The seller is not responsible for the grading on the slab. Don't like the sound of it.
