Alright - I'm a little bit lost. The Craigslist ad lists it for $300, after somebody (presumably the seller) paid over $400. Has the seller realized they got a bad coin and they're just trying to get out of it quickly?

Scubu: "trying to cut their losses"

If it is indeed a bad coin, why? Is that a significant scratch between the "B" and "E" running through the right arm? Or is it fake? It looks like incredible luster - so is this fake?

I'm not able to cut through the sarcasm to understand the real message "between the lines." I'm a noob at this stuff, can somebody help me out? =) I'm trying to learn, too...

I got that NGSC isn't a trusted grading service... thanks for the help! =)

Its not a fake, its just not a proof. 1936 proofs are very rare, but business/circulation strikes, even in low MS grades are not. Therefore the coin isn't worth $400 or even $200 because its a circulation strike. Personally I would have demanded a return and forced it over paypal even if they guy wouldn't, the person who is trying to pawn this off as a proof is an idiot and deserves to be scammed for being a jerk. He's a fool for not knowing how to get his money back. Why don't we email him and tell him to file a paypal dispute over it? He'll probably win. But then again, don't want to help someone like this...

Sorry to disagree, but G-4?

perhaps not a VF, but G-4?

I thought that I was a tough grader.

Whoa shadow... I'm naive and sometimes too nice, but I wouldn't draw all those conclusions from the available information... yet. Maybe the seller is a jerk, but you have to remember that he got scammed and feels stupid and this may be him just retaliating. yes, it's not the right thing to do, but it's easy for people to do this. And you don't know - perhaps he tried to get his money back but was unable because the original seller is the REAL jerk.

And TreasHunt and nolawyer - it's my (albeit limited) experience from looking at a few of these Seated quarters that sometimes they have fantastic strike and detail and little "cameo" or ... "reverse cameo" as I've seen it termed - in other words, there's a lot of detail, but the coin looks monotone because they patina an even gray. So it's hard to judge; this one very well could be VF (I've seen VF that looked like this) - but because of the small (and low resolution/low quality) photograph, it's tough to tell. If it really is no arrows, it's pretty neat, any way you look at it. Maybe not the asking price, but still, it's a neat one. =)

And yes, shadow - it's true! I checked my Red Book last night and though it's being sold as a "key date" (or it was on ebay), it's definitely not. =)
