Just picked this up. It has some of the typical strike weakness you see on these Buffs but it has that nice gold tone and luster that I like.

What do you think?

I dunno much about these things. Full horn = VF? How about VF30.

I feel it makes VF-35 which takes stike into account. The strike is really weak in key areas. Especially noticable in Liberty.

This series is difficult to grade to to varying degrees of strike weakness. I see MS64/65/66 PCGS coins that look to have wear strictly due to strike.

I'm with Cownas here I think. Based purely on wear, I think it could make XF-40. But the strike is so weak, overall details looks more like VF-25. So it would depend on how much you knock off for the weak strike, but probably a market grade within VF-30 or 35.

Are you supposed to knock off for weak strike on coins grading below MS?

People tend to have differing opinions on this, so I'm sure some will disagree. My opinion is that the technical grade should remain the same(ie it should grade XF-40 if it has wear consistent with XF-40), but the coin would probably sell for less....meaning it may only bring VF-30 money(market grade). In lower grades it can be difficult to determine whether weakness is due to strike or wear. Sometimes TPGs downgrade a coin significantly for strike even when they don't deserve it based on wear( My draped bust Half Cent is a good example of that).

Details, except the horn, IMO look more consistent with F-12. But, I am aware it is a very weak strike. I have no idea exactly what grade to give it though, but probably at least VF-30.

I'd say somebody with authority at PCGS or ANACS would probably grade it VF35.

Looks like VF+, but I suspect it's been cleaned or treated - suggested by uniform color (lighting?) and many small marks. It strikes me as as having an unusually sharp horn in comparison to other characteristics.

Interesting insights. The coin hasnt been cleaned. The luster and the characteristic gold tone that nickels often have bears this out.

Here are two more pics taken at an angle trying to show the luster. I am not sure how successful I was.

In hand the luster on this is easily consistent with an xf coin and the horn is complete but it probably is a VF coin. I paid XF money for it so once again I paid too much. The story of my life especially considering its weak strike.

For better or worse the luster and tone is what sold me on this.

It looks in the VF range to me too. I just started a collection of Buffaloes. My first was the 1937D 3 leg and I am working on getting a 13 S Ty 2. :) It will be a long journey but a lot of fun. I am collecting in the F12-XF40 range.
