Tonight I was looking through the paper money we brought back from our recent trip to Europe.

As I was looking through my English banknotes, I came across one from The Royal Bank of Scotland. We spent a day in Scotland, and I assume that's where we picked it up.

It's Five Pounds Sterling. 2005. Near perfect shape. Says it can be redeemed at the Head Office in Edinburgh.

We spent most of our day in Scotland in the city of Edinburgh.

This note pictures Lord Ilay on the front, and Culzean Castle on the back.

Questions include:

Would this note be worth more than face value?
What do the letters "plc" on thew front mean?
Would this note be more rare than notes issued in England?

Any additional information would be appreciated.

By the way, the note will either go in my wife's European Trip scrapbook, or in a frame to hang on my ofice wall.

Great Britain is unique in that the coins are for the entire nation, but England, Scotland and Northern Ireland issue their own banknotes (though Bank of England notes aren't going to be knocked back in Scotland, I'm sure). These are actual bank notes, issued by the bank mentioned. Both Scotland and Northern Ireland have a couple of different note-issuing banks.

Scottish notes are, I believe, scarcer than "normal" British notes, but on the other hand are more likely to be kept as souvenirs by visitors.

IIRC, "plc" stands for "publicly listed company". It's sort of a local variant of "Inc." or "Pty Ltd".

If I read my Pick correctly, Scotland currently has three note-issuing banks: Bank of Scotland, Clydesdale Bank and Royal Bank of Scotland. It's hard to tell without "mintage" figures, but judging on the price of Unc notes, I think the Royal Bank of Scotland is the commonest of the three.
