This coin has a decent amount of luster, especially on the obverse. It also has an above average strike for the date...not the best...but much better than most 1859's you'll see.

It looks a lot like my ex PCGS XF-45; so for that reason, I will give yours an XF-45. Here's mine:

I agree with your assessment about the level of detail. It looks like your obverse lettering has a bit more wear than mine, though. How much luster did you XF-45 have, because mine has quite a bit remaining?

I think this coin would easily grade AU50 if not a tad better. I had one heck of a time trying to photograph the true luster and color of this coin. I couldn't get the luster really in the above photograph.

Really? Your 1859 is worn pretty well at the top - Johnny's isn't. I was kinda thinking the other way around...

Are you talking about the 5? I don't think that is wear.

At this level of detail, it is all about luster imo. I don't see really see luster on Prethren's coin from the pics, but if there is as much as he says, then he's probably right on his AU-50+ assessment. I'm just used to seeing a bit stronger diamonds at the AU range. There is very little luster, if any left on mine, so it probably has a slightly better strike to retain similar detail in spite of the luster being worn off. Nice coin Prethren!

1859 issues are many times not well struck, especially the reverse. Mine is a slightly better strike than many I've seen. There's really not much wear on the coin. I suppose even with the amount of luster on the coin a firm like PCGS can be extremely conservative and still give it a 45, but I don't think it deserves that.
