Hi guys, I don't post here much, but I enjoy reading this forum a few times a week. I love numismatics, but I don't have as many nice/rare pieces like most of you guys have.
I've been buying and collecting junk silver since the early 80's. I have thousands and thousands of dimes, quarters, halves and silver dollars (especially Morgan's). If the US (fiat paper) dollar becomes worthless, I figure I'll be okay. I also have some gold and silver bullion, but my junk silver dominates.
I was just curious if any of you numismatic guys own any junk silver. If so, why? Thanks.

I search halves for silver. I enjoy the idea of finding a half for 50 cents which is worth 4 or 12 times its own face value (give or take).

I can't possibly be the only one here that would be interested in seeing a photo of your "junk silver". I've been searching nickel boxes for about 6 months now. It's always nice to find those war-dates!

1. Most people who are hoarding silver don't really want to advertise things with pics or paper trails.
2. Yep - I have a decent stash/hoard too - but have only been building for a year or so. Almost all of it acquired via roll searching. I do buy some junk lots when I can get them below melt.
3. BUT - I do sell off about 30% of what I find roll searching to buy numismatics.
Nice to have you around. I for one still think the market is artificially high, even with a 400 pt drop today, and think silver and gold are undervalued and being manipulated to stay low. That will only last for so long - the EU is failing, possibly more rapidly than many of us think.

I have several rolls of junk Morgan/Peace dollars but only a small stash of regular junk 90%.
I like having silver in the form of U.S. coinage for many reasons related to collecting and investing.
As a side note: I still find it amazing the premiums in the marketplace for junk silver dollars. Even when they "melted" at $10 it was hard to find them under $15 whereas regular 90% junk was available at melt. Curious.....

the only problem I have with junk Ag is I don't have enough, wow, thousands and thousands of Morgans? Very Cool, the last time I saw a pic of that many Morgans, was when they dug up Ted Binion's stash out in the desert

Even when they "melted" at $10 it was hard to find them under $15 I think that has to do with the popularity of Morgans. I have not been collecting U.S. coinage for very long, but it was obvious to me from the beginning that the Morgan dollar is the most popular U.S. type coin for collectors, even in low grades.

morgans are hard to come by at a good price where I live, i'd love to find a 1921 to carry as a pocket coin, but the very few I have are in good enough shape I would hate to damage them more by carrying it loose, so for now i'll stick to one in a flip tucked in my wallet

I'm guilty. I don't have a huge amount but I have been hoarding some junk silver. I like the look and feel of it plus the intrinsic value is always a good thing!

along with coins, I've been metal detecting for the past 3 years and have a fair amount of silver bracelets, earrings & rings. I can't seem to off any of it. Selling for melt seems to be the thing to do if the price is right, but I find myself saying, "When it hits 19.00, or a bit more, then I'll give it up" but what I really mean is. "I don't wannna".

If you are a collector, and want to sell, never settle for melt! Especially with silver halves, they should alway command a premium. ffd

I don't collect or hoard junk silver. The few coin dealers that I go to seem to treat it just like what it is called, junk. I would rather look for an individual piece for my collection than buy a roll of any thing in AG or junk silver. If the US dollar becomes worthless(highly unlikely) you would still have to convert your junk silver into another fiat currency so you could spend it at the grocery store.
