Slightly larger and thicker than an old one penny but would two (or even better three) of these be acceptable for a game of two-up?
Any ideas on the era and are there variations?
The Latin is a touch incomplete "It is sweet and fitting (to die) for one's country.", it should have 'mori' (to die) after 'patria'. That said I much prefer the second part of the full quotation which translates as "but it is sweeter to live for the homeland, and the sweetest to drink for it. Therefore, let us drink to the health of the homeland."

I've only attended a couple of these games in a bar here in Thailand with a load of Aussie tourists or ex-pats both times on Australia Day.

The coins are placed (side by side) on the upturned first two fingers of one hand or are placed on a small piece of wood. They are tossed in the air and then fall to the ground. A designated referee decides on the validity of the toss (height and turning of the coins in the air). The outcome is two heads up, two tails up or one of each. That is why it's better to have three coins because a definite outcome is guaranteed every toss.

Now comes the fun bit! People will bet on the outcome of heads or tails. Wagers are made with other participants , amounts agreed mutually. (As I suspect in Australia - but I could be wrong, definitely in Thailand) this betting is illegal. This is a very quick game and large amounts of money change hands very quickly. Some Australians claim there is a strategy to betting but personally I believe it is down to pure chance with a fifty/fifty chance with each toss.

When accompanied with boisterous Aussies, copious quantities of beer and the ubiquitous 'barbie' it's a great fun way to spend an evening. And on both occasions I ended up winning enough to pay for my night out!

No reason you couldn't play two-up with a couple of those. Now, back to the barbie and beers....
