Posted part of this in modern coin thread, realized it's not quite a modern coin anymore. I'd like to get some opinions on grade. This is one of the nicer morgans that came out of my mom's small silver stash from her SDB.

Looks to be VF25 with a rim ding. Looks to have been cleaned at one time.

i wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to have been cleaned...it was given to my grandparents for one of their anniversaries. it was part of a money lei of 50 Morgan dollars. so I'm sure whoever made the lei wanted them to be nice and shiny.

The coins were divided up among their 5 kids later on. That's how my mom got her 10. I wonder if my other aunts and uncles still have theirs.

FYI - your title say 1897 S ... the coins says it is a 1879 S
