I just got this one today. So how would you grade it? Also, what kind of value would you assign to it? Thanks!

D- Thanks for the input! I must admit that the surfaces may look a bit better due to the lighting of my scan, but there are not that many scratches. I was just hoping that no one would detect any wear on the crown or mustache (since I do not see any).

Archraz..I've done a little playing around and matched your coin to a known graded MS64 1935 dollar. ( Known MS64 on the left..Your coin on the right)

Your coin is no less than equal to...maybe even better IMO..

The problem with grading from a scan is the fields are blurred since the scan lens is focused on the high points of a coin. They just have no depth of field. Nice strike though, that's obvious anyhow :)

JimR & Ugly- Thanks for the responses! I too think that this coin is pretty well struck in the crown and mustache. Though this coin has few scratches and nice luster, I was just not quite sure what to make of the slightly flat-looking ear.

Believe it or not, I got this as part of a lot of 5 Dollars: 3 of which were 1935s & 2 were 1936s. (Yes, they are all real since they are the proper weight, definitely made of silver, and look right).

extremely nice dollar... no question about it.
I experimented with scans and photos.
each method has its advantages..
trust me, it is possible with photography to make sure, without a lot of time spent, to hide some imperfections... just with lighting and how you use it.
However, a scanner is brutal and shows everything....
your coin needs to be graded by CCCS.. and hopefully it makes MS65....
there is nothing to loose.....
go for it....

The strike is still mint state but the coin has lost lustre (unless its just the way the picture came out?). I hate to say it, but ICCS would grade it MS-62 to 63 due to the lustre loss.

laconic- Thanks for the input! Well, it actually does have nice luster. My scanner just never allows it to show properly.

laconic: Scanners rarely ever show lustre. They are great for grading circulated coins, but suck when it comes to uncirculated coins, just for that reason.

Sorry, I missed the part where the picture was scanned and not photographed. If the luster is better, you probably have a higher grade like the other said.
