Would this be better placed in the world error section?

The edge looks quite a bit like it was applied in a second step operation - similar to the 8R coins, US Bust Half Dollars or the new Dollars.

If the coin or coin blank is edged by some roller process distinct from the strike - there is always the chance that it will slip out part way along.

I know nothing about how Indian coins are made so with out that specific knowledge it is difficult to be certain.

True.. I don't know either.

It looks like it rotated itself right out of whatever was edging it.

Just examined the 50+ 5 rupee coins I have with that security edging and 20% were imperfect. So you couldn't really class it as an error it's just poor production methods.

I checked the few Indian coins that I have at home (just a handful) and I tend to agree with thai-vic that "recent" Indian coins in general seem to suffer from poor quality control in terms of die creation, die maintenance and production related issues. Quantity is apparently more important than quality.

So like other mints with lower quality standards for release(Colombia is another example) production errors abound and are of little relative value. Mints that retain and destroy production errors (like the US) are the only reason minting errors have any value attached to them.

Maybe I never paid enough attention to the edges of the Rupees I have, as I've never noticed any problems before. Poor production methods makes sense though, especially if they're not into quality control. Thanks guys
