I track every auction involving Mexican coins every day on ebay. In the process, I have noticed a new trend which is just a scam that ebay allows. A seller posts a real coin with a starting bid of $0.01 to $0.99 and no reserve. I first noticed it with an original 2 Reale but as I checked I noticed it occurs in many places. The scam is the shipping price which is $200 up. So I wrote to a few of them and asked if it was a typo. I got only one answer back but it was brief - The shipping charge is correct." So I checked ebay rules and found YOU CAN NOT COMPLAIN. That is offensive because it is intended to pray on the unsuspecting. I know people should check the shipping rate, but most people expect basic honesty and a rate of $200 is simply dishonest.

It's only a few clicks from the "Report item" link on any listing and you're done. Standard report option.

What I read said that ebay would not get involved in a dispute over postal rates or shipping costs. Perhaps the angle you are pointing out would work - avoiding ebay fees - that would get their attention. That is their money then. I just tried to look up the sellers I had noted and I find that the old sort option by bid plus postage seems to no longer be there. Neither is the option to display the postage rate when searching closed listings. Perhaps I am just missing it, but I will try to report the next one I see. Thanks for the angle to use.

What I had read a long time ago (don't remember exactly when, or where) is that people were doing that to keep the selling fees down on pricey stuff. There was quite a bit of it. Sell a two hundred dollar item for five bucks with a $200 shipping fee and the auction fees are a lot less because they are calculated on the ending price of the auction. Supposedly ebay was cracking down on this practice because it was simply a way to subvert the selling fees. I've seen it a little nowadays, but not like a few years ago. Perhaps ebay has too many other "fish to fry" these days. Might be worth an email to ebay, I dunno. Steve

Fees like $200 is a bit to much, way to much! But as a prospective buyer you have the option of just moving on. I look at it like another coin like the one this person is trying to sell using questionable methods will surly come along again. And when I bid I work the shipping fee into the equation of my bid when at all possible.

That is exactly what I do, but my concern is for the novice who does not check and starts out with negative feedback as a result. I really can't envision anyone paying $200 for shipping under any circumstance.

I would't have a problem paying that for shipping, if the total cost of the item is still within what I want to pay for it. If the seller screws epay out of their fees, it does not bother me.

i have seen this used many times in the past, it's not as bad as it used to be, but what if you're not happy with the "item" and are offered a refund - less shipping?
