Just wanted to share. This is one of my favorite coins even though it doesn't fit my "themed" collections. I got it at a weekend coin swap when I was in high school for insanely ridiculous price (well, I could afford it on my HS pocket money budget). For a very long time it was the oldest coin in my collection. It inspired me to buy my very first coin book, The Medieval Coinage of German States, with great illustrations. The two unfortunate things about it is that the book was in German, and I forgot to bring it with me to the US. Still ... I like this coin very much!

svslav- Beautiful coin! Thanks for sharing! Out of curiosity, since you forgot the bring to the book with you to the US, just what happened to it? Is it still in your possession, say in storage or in the house of a friend, or is it totally lost?

Thanks, Archraz. My parents should still have the book. I totally forgot about it until I started this thread. Since my parents visit us about every two years next time I'll ask them to bring it along!

Beautiful coin and I'm sure filled with history and a great story ...

What is the symbolism for the three figures in the center of the reverse ...... the ones with what today could be called goalie face masks ..... but back in 1865 most likely meant something else?

Thanks for sharing and also for your wise replies to all of our posts.

Thank you very much, David!
The German land has a very rich knighthood tradition and history. My ancestors, Slavs, were holding off knights of Teutonic and Livonian Orders. I don't know anything about the heraldry of this particular region but the knight helmets obviously represent something in its history.

Schaumberg-Lippe was a very tiny principality of less than 40,000 people, so this issue must be rather rare

svslav- ah, very good to hear that the book is not totally lost since it is such a shame when items are forgotten or lost in a move.

I got it (in the early 1980's) for an equivalent of about $20.

Krause gives the mintage figure of 7,000.

Archraz, yes, but I'm not sure I'm going to understand enough German to use it to the full potential.
