I would say the one on the right is just more worn, making the text look more bold. You can see it in the "10 CENTS" as well.

I understand the argument that lettering and numbering tends to be thicker on the bottom, so when wear occurs, the text looks thicker. However, look at the inside of the 5 and the space just above the lower hook of the 9. Can wear really 'widen' the digits that much, so as to appear to make the space that much smaller? It seems a pretty dramatic difference.

Thanks Splatto. it is IMPOSSIBLE to change the base dimensions....unless metal flows... and that is only possible with the original strike. That is exactly my point. you are soooooooo right. However, nobody seems to, or is even willing to, understand this......./ unless it is listed somewhere... like in Charltons.... it appears that if things are listed there,,,,, THEY are LAW!!! other facts are totally ignored in favor of yellow snakes and pink tigers...or( obviously purposely created OTHER "mint errors")

We know the sails and 10 cents wears on these coins before anything, and the dates are usually not hurt as much. To Me, I look at both A's in the end of canada, very similar, (as in same level, no wear) same with the dates, and , I think, you have diff dates IMHO!

Troy.... thank you... nobody else seems to think so... except YOU and I. I shall take this further in another forum... question is: if the 1969 is valuable... which on of these is the valuable coin?

I believe it to be simply the difference between a middle die state and a late die state. I'm not familiar with Canadian coinage but you can commonly see such changes on American coins of the same date. It could also be a bit of Machine Doubling that has evened out over time, but I prefer the former explanation over the latter.

pinenut, if you take measurements, your guess can easy be proven as not correct. there is NO way that it would make this large of a difference. when a coin wears off, it appears to be larger....ONLY appears. the base stays the same dimensions. even allowing for metal flow over time. This would then happen in all directions.

The most dramatic diff is in the "9"

They look different to me. That's no guarantee of an elevated value though. There are nearly and endless number of letter spacing, positioning, and other minor differences out there on coins.
