Does anyone see anything wrong in the pictures in this auction? http://cgi.ebay.com/1896-P-Morgan-S...em35a99e2abdI'm also trying to figure out where "Encapsulated" comes into this. Oh, I see it - it's gonna end up in a plastic capsule. Eventually. Steve Edited by Whytlash 06/03/2010 11:26 am

Hopefully he just took the coin out of an airtite in order to get better photos (less glare and reflection maybe) . Still not a smart thing to do and then list it as encapsulated. He should have clarified why it was out of the capsule.

The question was "Does anyone see anything wrong in the PICTURES in this auction?" So you guys are cool with coins being held in an unprotected palm of the hand? Regarding the "Encapsulated", at first I didn't see it because I was stopped cold by the pictures. I had to read past the amazing pictures to find the mention that it's sealed in a plastic capsule. When I'm not holding it in my bare hand. Palming the obverse and the reverse. Transferring the oils and acids from my bare hand to the face and reverse of the coin. Think about it: if that's how the coin is handled to take a picture, how must it be handled when it's NOT having it's picture taken? Steve

I don't think this seller primarily sells coins which would explain the handling methods.

Yeah, I thought of that, bearing in mind the statement "We have been buying and selling gold and silver for over 22 years." They have several more listed, inluding some worn CC's, all with the pictures taken the same way. The old CC's are no biggie, but AU and BU Morgans in hand like that makes me flinch. I've seen regular coin sellers on ebay do the same. It'll look great for a while, but give it some time and it's new "character" will show itself. "But I just washed my hands!" "Great. Now you got soap on it too." Steve

And that is why I just keep on moving when I see an ebay pic of someone holding a raw coin, especially in their sweaty greasy palm

Oh I do too. I was going to mention in my last post that I have seen a number of coins that looked great and I would love to have, but the person was displaying it in the pictures holding it in their hand, as the one above. I move right along. I don't even care for bare handed edge handling in the pics. I want to see a gloved hand. That to me is an indication of the handling the coin has received prior to the picture, and afterward. And I don't even think pictures of the coin in hand is the best way to display it. The less handling the better.
But I'm weird that way!

Yeaoow that makes me cringe. When I am taking coin pictures its like a surgical theatre. Protective gloves and a soft lens blower. I have some wonderful coins that have fingerprints probably going back to the 1930's. Those things don't come off.
