Those are gruesome. They remind me of arcade tokens or that Millenium token that weaseled its way into the 1999 Millenium quarter set. They need to make an E.T. coin out of kryptonite or meteorite for me to say "cool". Shouldn't we be celebrating people and things like the telephone (and now cellphone), penicillin, theory of relativity...... no.. little awkward instellar being with no sense of direction.. just like us.
(The reason I think that Peanuts is getting celebrated now and not in 40 years is because the franchise was recently sold. And just as I'd thought, Peanuts merchandise is exploding. Get your hands on the vintage Peanuts while you still can.)
Also, I hate to say, but while the bird quarters are a very nice design and concept, the technology just isn't at its best yet, and the images result in blocky/choppy squares. They could've waited a few years for that.

The E.T. medallion designs look like they belong on plastic play tokens, but at least they're not colorized. I'll even take an Army guy with a microscope over a colorized coin.

Anyhow, I don't bemoan them making this junk. It's the NCLT collectors who pay the price in the devaluation of their collections, not the classic collectors.

Quote: Just for starters, I totally object to non Canadian content being put on Canadian coins. Here here. If they really need to make stuff like this, how about a coin honouring a real Canadian hero like Billy Bishop?

Actually the back of the Peanuts coin says Niue Island so it isn't for Canada. Also the face value is suppose to be $10, but I don't see it anywhere on the coin, but maybe I have been blinded after seeing the coin. =P

Quote: if you did not want comments like mine....why put up a post you had to know would draw the wrath of most Most members know that I usually side with the RCM and tend to defend all collectibles. I resist to call anything junk to be respectful to others. So perhaps I was a bit frustrated yesterday when I saw this cartoon coin on a 5 oz coin - typically sold to grown ups. My post is contradictory in a way that's true. But had this coin been produced on a quarter or 50 cents I would have said nothing. As far as your comments? Oh well...

Yap at me for your frustrations? OK, if it makes you feel better I guess. But I understand your frustration with "junk"......

They also issued a sibling: $25 pure gold coin. Wow... a gold coin! Fortunately at least these aren't for Canada. I actually never bothered flipping the coin. I retract my harsh comments about the RCM. We are in love again.

Why would the RCM mint these items with Niue Island on the obverse. Did they back out of the deal and now they are trying to sell them off within Canada Low mintage on this stuff btw.

You never know, if they end up melting a bunch you might have a real rarity on your hands.
Try to look on the bright side :)

Price High + Design Low = Overpriced bad coin, with no face value - still can't see it on the coin.
Just glad it doesn't have the word Canada on it.

"So perhaps I was a bit frustrated yesterday when I saw this cartoon coin on a 5 oz coin - typically sold to grown ups. " Well, most of these grown-ups were around when Peanuts first started. The merchandising from these is gigantic. It's like the Yellow Kid, and more recently, The Simpsons.
But where does one draw the line on cartoons? Paper money? If you saw "Bart Bux" I'm sure you'd immediately lose trust in your currency. These coins are collectible. They should stay that way. So, I don't mind these so much, but to me they cease being coins because they don't circulate; they don't serve their purpose as money. The line is fuzzy.
