Why would the RCM mint these items with Niue Island on the obverse. Did they back out of the deal and now they are trying to sell them off within Canada
Low mintage on this stuff btw.

Why Niue and not Canada? I suspect because the Canadian government was unconvinced of the relevance of celebrating the work of an American cartoonist on a Canadian coin. But the RCM's marketing department wanted to make the coin anyway and they know that sales would not be very good if it was sold merely as a "mint medal". So they sought out a "flag of convenience", some cash-strapped country that would agree to give it the coveted Legal Tender stamp in exchange for a slice of the profits. Now the RCM can advertise it as a "legal tender coin", and hope that few of their regular customers notice that it's actually legal tender somewhere else.

Perth Mint, Pobjoy Mint, National Collectors Mint and the other private mints all do this, as they churn out "coins" with all kinds of themes. Perth Mint's flags of convenience are Tuvalu, Cook Islands and Uganda; Pobjoy uses Gibraltar and the Isle of Man; NCM uses Somalia and Liberia.

I beleive the currency of Niue Island is the New Zealand dollar. Is the $25 value of the gold coin $NZ? With a mintage of 2000 there is more than one coin per person on Niue island and the value of the coins is possibly more than their GDP.I hope that their government struck a good deal with the RCM and won't have to accept any unsold garish coins as legal tender in their country.

The isle government is likely in for bullion plus 10%. Anything not sold will be melted into something else.

The Gold coin is a lot better: Only Snoopy himself is 'colorized'!

> Just for starters, I totally object to non Canadian content being put on Canadian coins..you think they are targeting the kids market with this one?

(1) It's a 5 troy ounce silver medallion. I don't know why the RCM are referring to it as a coin. That requires a denomination. (Hence it isn't NCLT)
(2) It isn't Canadian. It's issued on behalf of the Niue Island (Rock of Polynesia). Although, I expect it was produced by the RCM.

As an American collector, I'd also prefer seeing subjects that have actual Canadian context. I can only guess the RCM is trying to expand their market with "ET" and "Peanuts" coins? I tend to think better quality collector coins generate more long-term interest, whether minted in Canada, US, Australia...anywhere.

It seems that Mints in their search for profits, have given NCLT a bad name.

In retrospect, I consider this more interesting than something plastered with US trademarks.

Yeah even ol' Bessie the triangular cow-coin is looking pretty good now compared to the Peanuts thing.

Now I may be wrong...but these coins are listed under COINS OF THE WORLD..these are not Canadian coins...IF you take the time to read the spec's ....I think you will agree...Most of the coins in that section SOLD OUT...some buyers liked them....

Koin, you are correct. I never took the time to look the obverse...

When I saw this peanut I just couldn't imagine the RCM would print something like this on 5 ounces of pure silver (same specs as the 2006 4 seasons $50 coin).

Anyways, it sold out. So I suppose this is a success and everyone should be happy now.
