Wow, that die was worked over to TRY to cover a clash. If the reverse doesn't look like this than the reverse die must have been replaced. Looks like a Freddy Kruger job. LOL
Strange things come from that era. Not sure what they were doing back then, but I've seen a number of odd gouges and the sort on Lincolns from 1985-1989.
