Thanks to all those that helped me with information! Here is what Bower's says: Large S. Blunt tail to are of DOLLAR, but no periods after E of FINE or are of DOLLAR: Not in Walter Breen's Encyclopedia. Fewer than a dozen seen to date. Discovered by James R. Arnold (his specimen is EF and weighs 417.9 grains). The period after the final A in AMERICA is a tiny crescent. Evidently the hub was damaged. "Does this occur on 1878 trades of any mint?" asks Walter H. Breen.
So it is classified as the result of a damaged hub. Edited by coins92 06/09/2010 4:59 pm

Johnny got it right on the first try. It is graded at MS62. IMO it is very conservatively graded.

Thank you, I have been trying to perfect my photography. I might end up putting the coin for sale here. I got the coin because I couldn't pass it up for the price. Not to mention it's not that bad looking either!

You may have a rather scarce variety here: Note the blunt tail on the are of DOLLAR, and the absence of periods after FINE or DOLLAR. In Bowers' Complete Encyclopedia of Silver Dollars... He notes "fewer than a dozen seen to date" (1993) and "not in Walter Breen's Encyclopedia."
You might want to check in with some of the experts on the CU forum, or the Gobrecht Society.

Interesting. I see what you are talking about. How would this get pat NGC? Something is definitely going on with the are like you said.

TD if you could post a link or a scan of the page that mentions the variety it would be greatly appreciated. There are no traces of any periods and the are is definitely cut short. Whatever variety you mentioned this seems to be it.

Anyway, looks like I am going to have to get the sledge hammer out and crack open this coin for resubmission and attribution.

Do VAMs exist for Trade dollars like Morgans and Peaces? If so do they command some of the same outrageous prices that some of the top 10 Morgan VAMs do ?

Hi Coins92, I doubt if NGC or PCGS will attribute TD varieties that are not in the cp guide. There is a small group of collectors building sets of these by die variety... a VERY small group... one of them might be interested... I suggested you post your coin on the CU forums because at least 3 members there are real TD EXPERTS (not me!): keoj, crypto79, and tradedollarnut. keoj, afaik, is writing a book on Trade dollars, and probably has up to date pop estimates and all sorts of info. My reference was to p.1017 of Bowers' Encyclopedia, Vol. 1
