Hi everyone here is a coin I have been after for quite sometime and finally was able to purchase one. It is an 1847 Gothic Crown which I personally think this is the prettiest coin Britain has ever made. What does everyone else think about it? Cheers Bryan Cheers Bryan

The coin looks beautiful, Bryan. I do like the design very much. Can I ask you about the edge inscription? My book warn about many forgeries, in particular for 1847. It should say DECUS ET TUTAMEN ANNO REGNI XI with "V" in Victoria aligned with ET. There's also a variety of 1847 crown with milled edge (I see that yours is not), possibly struck around 1887, with the value of £15000

Thank you for the comments guys very much appreciated. This coin is beautiful in hand and is probably one of my favourite coins next to the US Trade dollars. svslav the coin has most of those inscriptions the only thing it does not have is the XI after REGNI however it has UNDECIMO after it. Which book do you have that has the edge inscriptions? As I would like to find out more about this coin. Also just wondering what grade you think it might be? Cheers Bryan
Cheers Bryan

'Awesome' would be a gross understatement when referring to that coin Bryan. I thought to myself (when I saw the photos), "Now here is a guy with some sophistication and taste". You blew it when you mentioned US Trade dollars though....ugh.

Undecimo is Latin for (Latin numeral) XI. I'm getting my scoop from the Coincraft Catalogue. Here's what they say: Quote: In 1847 there was issued one of the most famous and elegant coins ever struck, the Victorian "Gothic" crown. Its design was a bold and daring departure from previous issues, and Victoria is reported to have been delighted with it. The reason for its issue remains a mystery, but possibly it was connected with the tenth anniversary of the accession. The queen is wearing a crown, not nowadays considered unusual on a coin, but at that time not seen on a British coin since the 17th century.

It is indeed a beautiful design, and a most magnificent specimen Bryan, but being the "most" is a mater of opinion. The UK has churned out some real proof jaw droppers in the past decade as well.

I must admit, neo classic American coins that are my favorites are the St Gaudens double eagle, and the Weinman Liberty Walking half dollar, but that Gothic crown is a beautiful coin. Mind you, the related gothic florin ain't bad either, and a bit less money to obtain.

Hi group, this is my first time to reply a post here. A few month ago I bought a Gothic Crown from on ebay from an UK seller. This lovely coin looks magnificent and very beautiful but I want to know more about it. I know what svslav said: Quote: My book warn about many forgeries, in particular for 1847. It should say DECUS ET TUTAMEN ANNO REGNI XI with "V" in Victoria aligned with ET. It is quoted from "Concraft's 1997 Standard Catalogue of English & UK Coins 1066 to Date" It reads from the collecting hints: ...The 'V' of 'Victoria' will align approximately with 'et' on the edge and with 'tur' of 'tueatur' on the reverse... My coin does not meet this hint but can you judge for me this is a fake? Bryan, can you show the edge of your coin for comparison? The weight of my coin is 28.30 grams, GBP820.00 on Aug 2012. Thank you for your comments.

They made three gold proofs of the Gothic Crown. If I had one of those, it would be all I would need for a representative coin in a collection British coins.
