peter1234, don't worry I am not a cheater or a counterfeiter, I am a real silver coin collector from Hong Kong from 2004. Please check my records in the forum. I bought this coin from an UK seller, roydinsdaleuk on Aug 2012, the price is GBP820.0 (buying not bidding). I want to meet an expert of this coin and tell me whether the collecting hints of the Coin Book is reliable or not. Frankly, I don't think this coin is a fake.

it's a beautiful coin: I can't see any tell-tales of a fake.

But I don't under stand why the collecting hints of Coincraft's 1997 Standard Catalogue was so assertive...many forgeries exist, a genuine 1847 lettered edge coin will usually 'look' old and have sharp edge lettering in the higher grades. The 'V' of "Victoria' will align approximately with 'et'.... Anybody having this coin, please tell alignment of your coin. Henry

neither link works. I would not like to call this one as good or bad as I do not profess to be an armchair expert in such matters - stating that there are many fakes in China is not terribly helpful. Here is what I'd do, send the coin to a TPG, if it comes back as bad write to trading standards here in the UK - they can, and will prosecute fake coin sellers. I've recently been called to give evidence in one such prosecution.

One is fake and one is real, can you tell which and why? This is the seriousness of this

andyg, I noted that you think sending a coin to a TPG will be the answers to your prayers. Unfortunately this won't answer them as it was noted that NGC had slabbed a pewter GB Half Groat, so a sticky wicket there unless you send it to CGS in the UK. *** Staff Edit - Family Friendly Remember? ***

nope I don't think it will answer all the prayers, notice that I was not silly enough to write that it would :) However if the route I suggested is taken then trading standards men are simple folk and will require some sort of proof as they themselves are not the experts.
I agree CGS UK are probably the best to send it to.
If NGC slab a fake then you can claim on their guarantee?

Apologies I just hate how our 99% honest brothers get ripped by fraudsters, shillers. We are not talking about a few quid here.

I don't know about the TPGs guarantee as I don't buy slabs, I buy coins. Trading standards are about as useless as an Ashtray on a Motorbike. Chinese fakes are getting better and its a worrying trend. Some people really don't care, they just want fast cash and don't care who they burn to get it. Its our Hobby and hard earned cash thats going to end up down the drain and really dislike the people who are knowingly selling Chinese fakes on ebay.

Is the second one the fake? I wasn't really sure what I was looking for but the detail in the band of the crown seemed better defined in the first one.
