Is an unexecuted bond worth anything? I can't find much information on them, executed or not. Edit: I thought some pictures and more info may help... It measures almost 17 inches high, 14 inches wide. There are no signatures or numbers... it was never executed/issued. The date on the far right reading down the side is March 23, 1863. The date of pay-back in the first sentence is "the first day of April, 1893." There are 9 bond coupons along the bottom dated every 6 months starting from April 1, 1864 through April 1, 1868, each for twenty dollars in interest payable to bearer. Apologies for the (lack of) image quality - main camera is being a bonehead. thanks for any help! Edited by xshift 06/15/2010 2:07 pm

Thanks, zeewool.. that's one I had not found. Info on these is pretty scarce - especially how to tell if they are authentic!

They have a very limited and specialized interest base. I doubt seriously if they were counterfeited very much, but I would also think that the best way to find out is to put it into the hands of an expert in such things who would look at color and paper quality. The paper should be quite thin and almost brittle I would imagine.

Here we go.. From http://currency.ha.com/common/view_...Lot_No=34092 (green emphasis mine): Quote: Ball 274 Cr. 133 $1000 1863 Bond Fine. This is a rare bond that has all of its coupons. Ball 274 is a R6, 51 -75 known. This bond was basically folded into eighths. It also shows aging and a glue repair at back top center down to the lateral center fold. These are listed at $500 in Fine in the Ball reference. How does the condition of mine compare to the Fine in the listing? Less creases, no repair, but more age spots!

Oh - and I didn't see your paper comment earlier, Zee. The paper is indeed very thin, but does not feel brittle. I have it rolled loosely in a heavy cardboard tube at the moment to keep it from getting damaged, but I need to get it out soon before it's permanently curled.

Good for you xshift..... I really like it when folks find out things like this about their collectibles..... Yours seems to be in much more collectible condition than the Heritage piece also..... no tears, holes, tape or glue..... I do think that it might be a good idea to get it out of the cardboard tube too..... drying out to the point of brittleness might become an issue (but I really do not know if the cardboard tube might do that or not)..... Quite a treasure..... Very neat...

I like the document which seems to be rare,I could be wrong, very nice condition for the years gone by, good luck....PS, If I were you and were to keep it, I would keep it rolled up to minimize the folds and bring it to a framing place and do a custom framing job for such a special piece,Thanks for sharing.....
