My mother worked in a bank her whole life, back in 1976 the country was booming with the Bi-centennial. She took 10 $2 bills and for some reason went to the post office in Panama city, FL. and had them do this to the bills.

She was never into coins or collecting anything but for some reason she had these, she passed on a few years back and I found them and never gave them much thought. I was 4 years old in 1976 so I never knew until after she passed that she had these.

Anyone know the purpose of doing this? I have never seen one before or since either but if someone had done this I imagine they would be put away so it is not like they would be in circulation.
What sent chills through me was that she passed on April 13 nearly 30 years to the day. Thanks, Tony

Tony, this was a very popular practice for the 1976 $2 note..... people did this to the first $2 notes that they laid their hands on..... Supposedly the stamp and postmark signified that these particular notes were first day issue..... Since not all Federal Reserve Districts issued notes on the same day, you will see many different date stamps on 1976 $2 bills.

If you look on ebay, (just search 1976 $2 stamp) under the heading of 'US Paper Money', you will see that there are many, many of these notes that have stamps and postmarks on their faces.

They are not particularly valuable, but in your case, there should be a considerable sentimental value attached, (HOLD ONTO THAT ONE buddy).
