Hi guys here is an 1873 Trade dollar I recently purchased and I am just wondering what grade this might be.
Cheers

I'll let the experts chime in,,, I think the boarder around the denticles is a bit thick, but it may just be the angle of the camera, nice coin.....

bryan10au,

Looks to be a nice EF-45. I see wear on the high points (Liberty's thigh and the leading edge of the eagle's right wing and left leg). I don't see anything that would lead me to call this a copy, but I always caution folks to put it on the scale. A genuine TD in this condition would weigh 27.2 grams =/- .1 gram. Anything less than 27 or over 27.3 would raise my suspicion. Nice acquisition!
Rest in Peace

Looks genuine to me, and XF. Can't tell if original surfaces or not,but then that wasn't the question.
It looks like Breen 5779, with broken serifs on the E of STATES and F of OF, due to hub damage. The same hub was used to produce proof dies.
P mint Trade dollars from 1873 through 1876 are not easy to find, and many of the 73's are chopmarked.
with a mintage of 396,900 Bowers estimated just 1,250 to 2000 survive in VF to AU58 grades. Congrats!
Rest in Peace

Thanks for the comments guys very much appreciated. The company I bought it from graded it AU55 but I wasn't 100% convinced.

TDColl if it is one of those coins does this effect the value at all from a normal 1873 one?

Cheers

I don't think so, but it's cool to know about.
After mulling it over, I could see it as AU.
