Does this looks like a coin or a medal? I don't have a Krause book for 17th Century. Seller is saying that it is unlisted. Except for being a crown-size, I don't see any denomination identifier. Unlisted maybe because it's not a coin? Attracting piece, though.

Crown-Size-Spain-1684?-Medal-Or-Coin?

I'm probably wrong here, but seeing the numeral(XXXI) leads me to believe it's some sort of comm. Subtracting 31 from the date gives you the year Parliament united England and Scotland? History isn't a strong suit.

The date is obviously not in the style of the period. My guess is that it is either a medal or a fantasy issue, fairly recent in either case.

This piece is in the name of Charles II of Spain. I doubt they would celebrate the union of the Brits.

On this site (provided by willieboyd) I believe it could be from 1685, with the one above there's no way they did these numbers in 1684! My vote is a forgery.

I am sorry to say, but this is undoubtedly a forgery. And not a contemporary one.

fireandice556 It is not an item that I am familiar with - but it is certainly very interesting. I would love to see it in person. Weight, SG and of course the edge would be very interesting information to have.

A point by point comparison with the other example dated 1885 yields a lot of interesting data. The engraving techniques are different and many of the small details are simply a different style. For example compare the two small castles and you will see two different designs. Lines on one are dots on the other. A forger engraving a new die (in the present time) would be less likely to take such a liberty with design). The two coins have an overall similar look and wear level. So do we have 2 fakes or 2 originals?

I do NOT KNOW and would not guess at this point. But I am attracted to it!

Very attractive coin. Don't get me going because I might start looking to find one of these!

Sorry if I did not get the date of the coin from this discussion. Does anyone know what the date on this coin is?

Notice how big the boot of Italy is on the globe as compared to Spain. I wonder if there is some significance?
