I found a 1870 1 yen coin while metal detecting. The coin is not silver and is the size of a Morgan dollar. It appears to be made of brass or bronze. Was this coin ever minted in these metals or silver only? I'm thinking its a copy but is not marked as such. Sorry no pic. WOLF

Yes, it was only supposed to be in silver. It could be possible that it's a trial or a counterfeit. Still, post a pic when you have the time!

Does it actually say 1 yen? It could also be a 1 sen coin... which was bronze but no where near the size of a Morgan.

Most off metal 1 Yen coins are forgeries. You did not mention where you located the coin. There are two types of forgeries - the type meant to be used in Circulation (or as bullion) and the type used to fool collectors. Based on the coin being brass or bronze, you have a better than average chance of the coin being a collectible counterfeit.

Pictures and weight would be helpful to make a diagnosis.

Found in My home town at spot where their was a tourist type spot around 1890s. They used to have big conventions there. Weight is 15.3 grams. Not the best pics but I hope they help. WOLF

The coin is definitely a counterfeit.

There is a rule of thumb in counterfeit collecting that RARE varieties were almost NEVER counterfeited for circulation. That is because forgers copied common coins so that the coin would not be noticed.

Since the original coin variety is RARE it is unlikely that it was made in the 1870s as Circulating forgery. It is far more likely that it is a Numismatic Forgery made specifically for collectors.

It is TOO crude in my opinion to be VERY Recent but I would most likely believe it dates to the 1950s or 1960s.

To prove an earlier date, the coin would have to be matched with known forgeries of that period and it would have to employ identical technologies which are NOT still in use.
