OK, look you guys and gals- possession of unmarked replicas, reproductions, fakes, whatever you want to call them, is illegal. Period, dot, full stop. This is part of the Hobby Protection Act. A law to protect OUR hobby. Having these unmarked pieces floating around is bad for the hobby in general, OK? Because they eventually fall into the hands of the less knowledgeable or unscrupulous and are sold as real items, frequently to new collectors who get duped out of hard earned collecting dollars. How many new people do we see here in a month with Chinese made fakes? Still think they are harmless? The darn things are everywhere now, not just ebay and other on-line sales venues, but in flea markets, junk shops, yard sales, secondhand stores, just about anywhere you can imagine. I have no problem with properly marked replicas, but outright fakes need to be melted back into whatever scrap they were made from to start with.

Here Here ! I agree SPQR !! One of the main reason PCGS, NGC, ANACS have made Hundreds of Millions of our dollars are due too the influx of the faked coins being put out wholesale. If you have ever sent in a coin you could call 1.00 of this fee a (NOT FAKE FEE) "so you are paying for this type of commerce!" (Due you still think it's OK!
20 years from now some grandson finds this thing in a box..sells it too a buddy as real. He thinks its real, is it fair too the friend that bought it because it neat? Or will it taint him from becoming a true coin collector?

I think it is absolutely right to outlaw the practice of selling counterfeit/fake/replica coins with or without being advertised as such.
But how can you criminalise being in possession of such a piece if you are not trying to sell it. That means you will have to rely on other experts throughout the world to spot them and educate the rest of us on how to spot them.
Admittedly I don't live in the US and so don't face prosecution under your laws but I have several fakes in my possession and I keep them for my education and for the education of others. I have no intention of selling them on, period, either as genuine or fake.
Nobody is going to stop the flood of these pieces throughout the world (unless certain countries clamp down hard on the forgers but, let's face it, that isn't going to happen).
I'm afraid it's going to be down to the vigilance of the serious collectors and those that are willing to educate us. Something that this site (and others) does admirably.

I have to agree wholeheartedly with SPQR. First, it is illegal for him to be selling thse. Second, it is bad for our hobby in general, as these will (and by making a point of saying they are not marked, the seller realizes this) at some point be resold as genuine.

Also, NLP, MARK THAT REPRO! What happens if you die? Do your heirs know or care that that coin is a replica, so some unknowing fellow collector won't wind up with it in the future?

Isn't it counterfeiting? If it was paper money say "reproduction" of a $100 us bill selling for $25, I would think the Secret Service or US Customs would be all over you. The other thing on ebay, which I fell for, are the so called "Silver Art 1 oz. Bars" that are.999 fine then small print stated it was a silver "clad" bar. These items are selling right alongside the real bullion silver bars. To me if they are copies or clad then ebay should have a category for fake crap like that and keep them out of the genuine bullion auctions and same for coins too. I tried to notify ebay about the problem and that was a waste of time. The first thing listed in the help section should be fake items but I couldn't even find a way to report it. I know BUYER BEWARE but ...

SDcoinguy, yeah I'm waiting to see if that Morgan shows up in a single auction here soon- or if he'll pass it on in one of those "estate" auctions
