I went metal detecting and found a v-nickel in pretty bad shape. I use nic a date on my buffalos and it seems to work pretty good. Has anyone tried this on v-nickels? I looked up the composition of both types of nickels and its the same. 75% copper 25% nickel. Would it work on v-nickels?

Thanks, Taylor

Yes, it will work on any coin with a 75/25 CuNi composition. Buffaloes just happen to be seen with more worn dates than any other series due to the design.

Yes, it works just the same. Good luck and let us know the date you find!

Nic-a-Date leaves ugly black marks around the date. Use white vinegar instead; it takes longer (several days), but the nickel still looks pretty good, although it might look a little dull.
Rest in Peace

I used it on a worn V nickel I found in a roll. It really worked quite well.

It works on V nickels, but often pretty hard to restore in my experience. Usually if you can't see the date, it's worn down pretty far. But I have restored some dateless successfully, but they can be real tough to read and convince someone else of the date

I constantly go around buying up undated V nickels. They are usually dirt cheap, and have never found one (with honest wear; if they are banged up that's a different story) that I have not been able to restore the date on. You never know; might get an 1885,1886 or a 1912s!

well if you can identify that theres an s on the nickel without nicadating it, then you already know that its a 1912s since that is the only sanfrancisco mintmarked coin in the series. Nicadating it would just hurt the value.

I use a PCB etchant from radio shack for bringing out the dates. It has ferric chloride just like nick-a-date and cost $10 for a 16 oz bottle. It works great!
