Bear with me, I'm gonna try this picture posting thingy again... I found this coin in a can of cents, of all places, and I'm pretty sure this is the top of the list when it comes to strange finds. Here's the obverse, it's (or was!) a 1911-D Barber dime. And here's the reverse, someone tried to run it through one of those coin elongators, but the design didn't completely imprint. I can make out a "33", part of "World's Fair" and part of the word "building". Why anyone would do this to a Barber dime is beyond me! Rachel [:p] *crosses fingers, prays that pictures work*

Cool lol. Did they have coin elongators in 1933? Maybe some tried to do it to the dime during the 1933 world fair?

The 1933 Worlds Fair was in Chicago. The Barbers were probably still in circulation and/or a kid tried to put it through the penny smashing machine. Makes for an interesting but, odd coin and sad for the damage to the beautiful Barber.

Actually the coin maybe worth more in the condition it is in now!!
If this was in fact done at the 33 worlds fair, the coin takes on a bit of a novelty personna .
I know there is an elongate member on the forum ,, perhaps He will pick up on this thread.
Very cool find !!!

That's a pretty cool find!! That's something that I don't have in my elongate collection, an elongate error. If you ever decide that you could part with it, I promise I would give it a good home!!

Yes, I think this would be worth quite a bit more than a normal Barber dime in that condition (which isn't a whole lot).

I presume the coin was probably in average VG-F condition... from my July, 2005 Coin Values, It would be $5.00. I think you could " ebay it" for at least twenty bucks, so the kid who did that made you some money. hehe.

Unusual-yes! I can tell you there were still a few barbers in circulation in the 50's as I still have a few of them that I put away. Not much different than finding a 50 year old coin now in circulation- like a 54D Jefferson which I got in change just a few days ago. Anyway, your coin is a neat find. Dewey

Oh no Rachel, I think that's worth more than a few bucks. However with exonumia there's no realiable pricing for a lot things. But the more unusual something is the more exonumia collectors tend to like it. GOOD FIND!

This is a neat find. This is a coin that you can prove actually "participated" in some long ago historic event, in this case, the Chicago World Fair in 1933. My guess is that this particular 1911-D Barber dime is worth considerably more than other 1911-D dimes with this degree of wear. Thanks for sharing with us!

I'm floored! I thought it was beyond any value as a collectable. Well, I'm not willing to part with it, but if anyone is ever in my neck of the woods I'd be glad to show it off in person, OK? Next time I'm at my favorite coin shop I'm gonna bring it along and see what the guys there have to say about it. Guess I can't be too mad at my co-workers for letting the coin pile up while I was off, I never would have found this! Rachel [:p]
