So, I just had a listing removed. This medal: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sudetenland_MedalI guess I didn't think it was all that horrible, as I just worked my way through selling a large volume of "Nazi-era" coins. Any thoughts on where I could sell something like this? Or am I better off just hanging on to it?

Hold on to it. You could shut down forums everywhere. What am I missing? Is this some tired ethnic thing, or offensive to one person only?

fioti,
I guess Sept. 11th will someday be discounted as "some tired ethnic thing" if we let it. If you haven't visited the Holocaust Museum in DC, it would be a very moving experience, if you ever have the chance. No, it should be offensive to every human being on the face of the Earth.

Offensive does not mean the piece lacks true historic value. I find the retelling of the stories themselves to be distasteful and painful to listen to yet they must be recorded and reviewed.
To try and prevent the sale of "offensive" items with historical value and in built lessons is small minded.

You might be able to sell it at a forum such as this, though I dont know whether or not this forum allows the sales of non-nuministic products. I generally dont see the problem selling historical artifacts such as this, the item in question did not commit any evil acts, the people who created it did. I doubt many of the people who object to the selling of this medal would object to the sale of a belgian coin from the early 1900's even though those people commited atrocities as well.

I had thought of forums, but my intention was not to sell it here - this is wholly the wrong kind of forum for such an object. I just figured I'd ask advice of probably the closest "relevant" forum that I belong to.

Quote: but my intention was not to sell it here - this is wholly the wrong kind of forum for such an object. It's technically a piece of exonumia. The fact that it is a piece depicting "Nazis" doesn't automatically make it evil and wrong. It's history plain and simple. I learned something new today...... Quote: The medal was awarded to all German (and as well Sudeten) State officials and members of the German Wehrmacht and SS who marched into Sudetenland. Later it was awarded to military personnel participating in the occupation of the remnants of Czechoslovakia on March 15, 1939. Forgoing any objections from Bobby you are more then welcome to offer it for sale/auction on our forum

To suppress history is to forget it.
Never forget.

Although the item in question is a reminder of a dark time in our world history, it is in no way offensive. Without such reminders, people would eventually forget over time. To forget my friends, would be the worst offense of all. Such is the case with the crusades, another dark time in history's past when men, women, and children were slaughtered in the name of religion. And if you think these dark times have not been forgotten all you have to do is ask your teenage children about them. Another good example is the taking of the lands from the rightful owners that now make up the great nation in which I and many others of this forum live, The U.S. of A. So just because an item bares a symbol that a mad man twisted into what is now the most recognized symbol of hatred does not make it offensive, unless it was presented with the intent to offend.

I think the only reason that ebay would have a problem with it is because of the swastika. I have seen similar items on ebay where they just covered the swastika and never had a problem

I believe ebay entirely banned the sale of German WWII items with swastikas. Even if the seller covers it up, it is no longer acceptable and the auction is removed. Except for the sale of coins and stamps...
