Quote: The world's largest gold coin - a 2007 Canadian piece with a face value of $1 million - is set to hit the auction block in Austria later this month.
The coin weights 100 kilos and is 53 cm in diameter. It is currently listed in the Guinness Book of Records and has the largest official portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in solid gold. The back shows three maple leaves.
"But the most remarkable thing about this impressive coin, which cannot even be lifted by two men, is that it is made exclusively of the purest, finest and most refined gold: 999.99/1000 gold," the auction house Vienna's Dorotheum said in a release Friday.
"The face value of $1 million is far below the current gold price. The starting price will be based on the daily gold rate."
The coin had been on loan to the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, but will be auctioned off June 25.
Today's gold price is US$39,281 per KILO so this coin is woth almost $4 million US in gold content alone!

A few smart alack comments:
My 2009 Charlton's guide has it at $3.00
The one with the wide "B" is worth $4 million and 2.
The the garage mechanic who found it in loose change is lucky, at first he mistook it for a hub cap.

It sure isn't very flattering to the queen. She looks much better in a smaller coin where less is sometime more.

If this were a US coin, it would have a face value of 200,000 USD. (US bullion coins generally have a 1/20 legal tender value of the metal.)

Brass scrap prices... lol... actually the janitor at the mint made the coin with left over pieces when he was sweeping up the floor and cleaning out the machines. =P

Thanks ugly. I think this classic coin should be in the `vanilla` listing one can choose from the drop down avatar list anyway.

HMMM, I wonder if Whitman makes a folder for this one?
BTW, for you who do not use the "metric system, ( and the US once said they were going to convert), but. One kilo is two pounds, 3 oz. Precious mrtals are weighed in troy weight, and the crap we use is in avordupois, (SP). Dick
