Just wondering.. How many of us,like me are leaving our coin collection to our kids/kid?Grandkids,neices,nephews?Coin collecting has become such a passion of mine,I would just love to see it continue on.I only hope my son loves it as much as I do. It's more than just an investment, and I hope he see's that. It is also a healthy past time for kids as well as adults. sn31.

I wanted to leave my collection and coin business to my kids, but neither one have shown interest in numismatics. My youngest seemed to be interested for a while, but then it waned.
I'm not sure what I'm going to do with my collection when the time comes. Maybe by then I'll have grandchildren who are interested.

Judging by the poll in this thread, most forum members are hoping to pass on their collections for the next generation.

My goal since my little guy was born is to pass them on but many things will contribute to what I actually can and will do. This past fall I lost a very very good job which I had held for 28 years and the company just decided to eliminate two positions and I was one. Needless to say my coins literally saved my butt for the eleven weeks I was unemployed this past winter. While I hated to see so many key dates disappear over that period of time my private little stash was there for an unplanned emergency and I, and my family, was thankful. Had it not been for my dedication and beliefs over the years they would not have been here for such an emergency. Now that I am working my way back up the employment totem pole, so to speak, I still find myself having to sell a coin or two now and then and I have learned to REALLY appreciate this hobby for reasons that were unexpected. I am still collecting knowing that in the future my collection may again be called upon for another emergency and I look at every purchase as not only something to pass on to my son but as a possible answer to a family crisis that could loom out there on the horizon. Hopefully things will get better and my stash will grow and someday I indeed will leave my little guy with quite a collection. Actually I have also been building a pretty nice collection since he was born in 2002 that is his and his alone. He receives money from relatives almost every holiday so we bank it until it reaches a level where something nice can be purchased and then a coin related item is added to his collection with his money. The banks pay him very little in way of interest and many of the coins we have purchased since 2002 have already increased far more than the amount of money he would have received if we left it lay in the bank. I also contribute weekly to his account and together we have built quite a collection of gold and silver, both classics and modern, which will someday, hopefully, serve him as well as my efforts have served me. This hobby has been more than good to me and I have ALWAYS purchased every coin with the intent of holding for the long term. Hasn't always worked out that way but it has been a joy and a life saver having coins in my life. One can't really measure their true value until you MUST count on them for a few weeks of survival. I know no other hobby that could have done what my coins did for me last winter. And, Old Dan, I DID NOT sell a single buffalo!!!

I had been thinking that it would be nice if my collection ever ends up in a public museum. But we have something called online display of our own collection

Hmmmm, that fishing boat idea of Dogman sounds like a good idea.
I don't know what will happen when I die, I'm insured for plenty so it isn't something I worry about. Maybe my kids will enjoy them, maybe they'll get rid of them, maybe I'll get that fishing boat between now and then. In any case I do this for my enjoyment, not with an eye towards future investment or whatever. If it turns out one of them can have fun with them and continue what I started, or rather what my Dad started, thats fine. If not, thats fine too.

I don't mind repeating sn31...I too lose track of some of the threads. Since I have no Heirs, my collection will either go piecemeal to friends or liquidated at some time in the future. Thanks for asking. It's always nice to see what some of our new forum members have in store for theirs.

No worries, sn31 - I wasn't mad or irritated, just posting a connecting link for folks who might have missed it first time round. The poll was a few months ago now. It certainly doesn't hurt to re-raise topics. Hmmm... now I can't even remember how I voted in that poll . I currently have no direct descendants, so that's not an option, but there are a few cousin's kids showing an interest in coins; maybe I'd will it to them, if they continue to show an interest. Otherwise, I'd consider donating some to the local coin club, either to add to the club collection or sell in the club auctions to raise funds.

I somewhat have to mirror Terry's response in that I wish to leave my Daughter a collection.(she already has a prety nice one now) I have at several points in my life had to sell off parts of my collection. Again, like Terry stated it was not my intent to part with the coins, but they came in very handy in times of financial woe. Most of my collection was sold off in the last few years to help pay some of the 100K in medical expenses I have had. That was my out of pocket costs after the insurance company put out 1.5 Million dollars!!! If I live long enough I hope to build another substantial collection. Mike
