Looks like a lamination error to me. if it was struck through a piece of wood I don't think you would see as much detail of the image in the affected area.

I'm thinking lamination peel. Same reason as Ziggy with the jaw as strong as it is. If it were a struck through, that area under the peel would not have been formed into the jaw area. The peel cam off and left the grand canyon.
