OK I am learning something everyday.
Why is the 2009 Roosevelt so elusive?

they only minted 146.00 million dimes last year and from what understand they are hard to come by b.c a lot were not released yet and I think a bunch went to puerto rico. well at least thats what my buddy told me and he runs an armored car service.

The mintage is down due to the economy. Everybody is hurting for cash for beer money. All those buckets bins and barrels that people were throwing their pocket change in got cashed in. With billions worth of coinage finding its way back into circulation, why would they even have to make any more. At least thit is my take on the reasonings

Is this dime rare or are the distribution problems?

I would not say they are rare as far as the amount minted goes. there were 96.5 million dimes minted in philadelphia 49.5 million dimes minted in denver in 2009 This is really low compared to former years but I would not consider them rare. the only clad dime that has a lower mintage is the 1996w and I dont think that was a circulation release. you have to go back to 1962 in the Philadelphia series which had a mintage of a little over 72 million before you will find a mintage lower than 2009. and as far back as 1955 in the denver series where it was a mintage of 14 million

Thanks everyone for the detailed information. I think everyone has learned from all your posts. Of course I will not be able to help myself from checking my pocket change for these dates anymore.
I already check my change routinely - found a 1942 nickel a few weeks ago - just an interesting find to have an old coin still in circulation.

I agree with mrwisker, I myself have cashed my coin jar in from time to time to make the ends come together. There is a reason why the major banks have those coin counting machines in their lobby, say to generate their own rolls of coins instead of buying from the reserve. As well as saving on labor at counting all those coins. Yes folks we are in the eye of the economic storm called the "Great Recession". Good Luck to All!
