Hi 'worldtraveler'. The note you have is 5,000 Tenge from the EMIRATE OF BUKHARA dated 1337 AH/1918 AD. Bukhara was a vassal of the Russian Empire up until 1917 when it became independent for a short period until 1920. In 1920, the territory was taken over by the communists, and became the BUKHARA SOVIET PEOPLES REPUBLIC until 1924. The early Soviet issues used the Tenga system almost identical to what you have, with the exception of some variations (hammer and sickle, different hand stamps etc). Later in 1920, Bukhara converted to the Ruble system and used it until 1924, when they and other territories were forced to convert to the currency of the U.S.S.R. under Stalin's rule. The note you have was printed with carved wood blocks, thus resulting in crude and often uneven patterns. Bukhara became part of Uzbekistan in 1925. You should be able to find the Emirate issues in Krause's catalog of 'World Paper Money' Vol.2-General Issues under 'Uzbekistan'. Soviet issues, would be listed in 'Vol. 1-Specialized Issues' under 'Russia-Central Asia'. I hope this helped.
