Just an info post. Here is the result that can happen with a 1976 5 cent Nickel. Please take note how much a very rigid substance like nickel can be manipulated by a set of dies working at full up pressure. Yes this is a real error coin. A double struck brockage. A huge spoon when in hand.

How can you tell those are 1976? The date looks completely ineligible. Also, where can you find a double struck brockage coin shaped like that?

All of these coins were struck from the same dies and or cap. I have the cap, and 15 coins made off of it. To find error coins....you must be lucky, error educated, diligent and dogged. But they are out there.

coinsrfun-How do coins like your double struck brokage escape the mint or coin rolling services? Surely it was never in circulation.A back-door job of some sort?

I believe they left the mint in bags. Some of the best finds error wise have come from bags purchased unopened and then opened. Count was done by weight. Not size. IMO

More than 99% of the bags that left the mint were rolled for circulation, thus at least 99% of these errors which escaped the mints quality control must have been found at the time of rolling as they would not fit into rolls. Were they sent back to the mint as defective? Were they sold to dealers or collectors? Or did they leave through the back door? I have been curious about this for a while, any insight would be appreciated.

The dissemination after being found in the bag is speculation to me as I was not there, however, all of the three things you mentioned are more than likely correct!

coinsrfun, it sounds to me like you have a job @ the mint. Dont go stealing all of our errors on us. Some of us are cherry pickers!

How did you receive the cap and 15 coins made from it? sounds like an inside job!

Troy - CRF said he buys unopened mint bags. It's almost guaranteed that if you find a cap in a bag, you will also find coins made from the cap. If I may say this, I think it is very poor form to accuse someone of "stealing", and accusing them of being a part of an "inside job" at the RCM. Those are very serious allegations.
